曾经听过这么一句话:“Our ultimate goal, after all, is not a good death but a good life to the very end.”

I hadn’t fully appreciated the Silent Mentor Program until I stood before those who had given their bodies to teach us. Until then, all our learning came from living patients, people who could talk to us, explain their symptoms, and tell us their stories. But through our Silent Mentors, I learned something I never could from words alone. I had the chance to perform my first intubation, chest tube, and central line, and to understand real human anatomy in a way textbooks cannot offer. We were the last to learn from them, and their kindness will stay with me as I grow into the doctor I hope to be.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn from my silent mentor. This experience has taught me more than just procedural skills; it has reminded me of the importance of compassion, respect, and humility in becoming a doctor. Even though it is very hard to wake up early every day, I believe it also teaches us discipline.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful and soul-stirring experiences in my journey as a medical student. What began as a practical week to hone surgical skills quickly transformed into a deeply emotional and humanistic journey that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

The experience began with a visit to the hometown of our silent mentor, the late Mr. Lee Tee Meng, in Muar. Meeting his family—seeing where he lived, hearing about his life, values, and character—was profoundly humbling. His family welcomed us with warmth, generosity, and a sense of quiet pride in his final act of altruism. It was there, in that intimate space filled with photographs, memories, and stories, that I first understood the depth of his sacrifice. Mr. Lee Tee Meng wasn’t just a donor—he was a father, a friend, a man who lived with purpose and chose to continue giving, even in death.

As the week unfolded, we learned a variety of crucial surgical procedures—suturing, chest tube insertions, tracheostomies, and more. But each incision was not just a clinical step; it was a lesson in trust, dignity, and the weight of responsibility. We were constantly reminded that our silent mentors had once been living, breathing people with families who loved them, and this awareness permeated every action we took.

What set this program apart was its humanistic core. From the initiation ceremony to the final gratitude rituals, we were encouraged to reflect not only as students but as future healers. We cleaned and prepared our mentor’s body for the final journey with our own hands—suturing, dressing, and placing him in the coffin—as a mark of respect and closure. It was an emotional moment, standing alongside his family, thanking Mr. Lee Tee Meng not just with words, but with the sincerity of our actions and presence.

By the end of the program, I was left with much more than surgical skills. I had gained a renewed sense of purpose, compassion, and reverence for the lives behind every patient I will meet. Mr. Lee Tee Meng’s selfless gift has left a permanent imprint on my medical journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Thank you, Mr. Lee Tee Meng. Though you were silent in voice, your final act spoke volumes.

Through the Silent Mentor Program, I have learnt the true meaning of humility and generosity. Seeing individuals without prior background in the medical field dedicate themselves to medical education after the end of their lives reminds me of the honour and privilege I have in learning from my silent mentors. I thank my silent mentors, for they have taught me what medicine truly is — a profession rooted not only in science, but in deep compassion, selflessness, and respect for human life. Their final act of giving has instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility to treat every patient with dignity, to always strive for excellence in my practice, and to never take for granted the trust placed in us as future doctors.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most humbling and meaningful experiences of my medical journey. I feel deeply honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to learn through the generosity of someone who chose to serve others even in death.

Through this program, I learned practical skills that are essential in clinical practice—such as nasogastric tube insertion, bladder care, intubation, chest tube insertion, and suturing. But beyond the techniques, what truly stayed with me was the profound lesson in empathy, respect, and gratitude.

This experience reminded me that medicine is not just about procedures, but about people. Every step we took, every skill we practiced, was possible because of someone’s final gift—a gift given selflessly, with the hope that we might one day use what we learned to ease the suffering of others.

It was more than a training session. It was a silent conversation between teacher and student, one that taught us to approach our future patients with gentleness, dignity, and humanity. I carry this lesson with me, and I am sincerely thankful to my Silent Mentor and their loved ones for their trust, their courage, and their incredible act of love.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most profound and humbling experiences in my journey as a medical student. It is a rare privilege to learn from individuals who, even after their passing, choose to dedicate their bodies to our education. These silent mentors—our teachers in the truest sense—have given us something no textbook or lecture ever could: the gift of real, human learning.

Walking into the workshop, I felt a deep sense of reverence. I was not just there to learn anatomy — I was there to honour lives, stories, and sacrifices. Each donor had a name, a family, a life filled with love, struggle, and meaning. They were not cadavers. They were our mentors. Their silence taught us respect, their stillness taught us compassion, and their presence taught us responsibility.

Through the workshop, I developed technical skills and a deeper understanding of the human body, but more importantly, I gained a sense of empathy and humility that will stay with me throughout my career. It reminded me that behind every patient is a person, and behind every diagnosis is a story.

To the silent mentors and their families, I offer my sincerest gratitude. Your generosity and courage have shaped us not only as future doctors but as human beings. You have taught us that the essence of medicine is not just in curing, but in caring—with gentleness, dignity, and respect.

As I move forward in my training, I carry with me the lessons you have silently passed on. I promise to honour your legacy by striving to become a doctor who listens, understands, and heals—not just with knowledge, but with heart.

Thank you for being my teacher.

The Silent Mentor Program was a good experience for me. From start to finish, it was well organised and well executed by Mr Sia and team. He made sure to set the expectations clear from the very beginning, which made it doable as participants despite the high time commitment.

The Silent Mentor Program gave me a fresh pair of glasses through which I now view medicine and its practice. Experiencing the entire process from the home visits to the burial has allowed me to understand better the process of grieving for illness and death.

Beyond that, the workshops were extremely useful in giving me exposure to the various procedures that were covered. One thing that I found inspiring was the willingness of all the trainers to take time out of their undoubtedly busy schedules to come and spend hours teaching us medical students. This spirit of passing on knowledge and skills is something that resonates with me deeply, as it demonstrates the collaborative nature of learning, and it reminds me that we should always have a humble approach to knowledge because it ultimately does not belong to any of us!

A big thanks to everyone who was involved in the 41st Silent Mentor Workshop.

The Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply humbling experience that reshaped my understanding of what it means to be a compassionate and respectful doctor. Through every step, from the home visit to the anatomy sessions, I was constantly reminded that medicine is not just a science, but a deeply human profession rooted in empathy and gratitude.

Learning from someone who has given so selflessly taught me to approach every patient not merely as a case, but as a person with a story, a family, and a life that deserves dignity. Mr. Goh, our silent mentor, has been a powerful source of inspiration. Though we never spoke, his actions spoke louder than words. His willingness to contribute to the education of future doctors, even after death, showed me a rare form of courage and generosity. It is this quiet strength that I hope to emulate in my journey as a doctor, carrying forward the values of humility, service, and lifelong learning.

There was a moment during the program, while gently performing a procedure, when it truly hit me just how much Mr. Goh had sacrificed. He gave us his body, but more than that, he gave us his trust. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility, not only to use this knowledge wisely, but to honour him through the way I treat my future patients. His final lesson to us was one of love and selflessness, and I will carry that with me always.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been an incredible and humbling experience. It’s a rare opportunity that honors the lives of our mentors while allowing medical students to learn and practice valuable clinical skills. The most memorable part for me was the hands-on workshop, where I gained practical experience with procedures that are difficult to access during regular clinical postings. Thanks to the mentors' selfless gift, I was able to learn in a meaningful and respectful way.

This journey also taught me the value of teamwork—especially during the home visits, coffining, and cleaning. I’ve gained not just skills, but friendships and deeper insight into the human side of medicine. To all the mentors and their families, especially Silent Mentor Goh, thank you for your courage and generosity. Your legacy will live forever. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Silent Mentor Program. In just one week, I experienced something that left a profound impact on me, both as a medical student and as a human being.

Each day began before sunrise, as we gathered to care for our silent mentor, cleansing and preparing the body with gentle reverence. At the end of each long day, we returned again to tend to them, always reminded that this was not just a body, but a life once lived, a person once loved.

What made this program truly transformative was the home visit. Meeting the family, hearing stories of their mentor's life, laughter, struggles, and values, it gave soul and meaning to our learning. This is what sets the Silent Mentor Program apart: it doesn’t just teach us anatomy; it teaches us humanity.

Through this experience, I’ve come to understand the immense trust placed in us. Our mentors made the ultimate act of selflessness, to donate their body so future doctors may learn, so future lives may be saved. Their gift was not made for themselves, but for a future they would never see. I often ask myself: so many doctors have benefited from this program, but how many of us have pledged to become donors ourselves? The answer, sadly, is likely few. This only highlights how immense, how courageous, and how noble their decision truly is.

Yet it is not only the mentors who deserve our gratitude. The greatest burden often falls on their families. It is the loved ones who must give the final consent, who must face the pain of a funeral without a body, who endure the heartache all over again when the body is revisited months later. It is like reopening a long-healed wound, painful, emotional, and brave.

To Mr. Goh Jui Leng, my silent mentor, and to his remarkable family, thank you. Your sacrifices have left an indelible mark on me. You have not only taught me medicine, you have taught me compassion, respect, and the sanctity of life.

This week has reshaped the way I see patients and practice medicine. It reminded me that behind every clinical case is a human being with a story, a family, a hope. In the fast pace of hospital corridors, it is easy for us as doctors to become desensitized, to speak of death clinically, to move on quickly, to protect ourselves from emotional fatigue. But this week reminded me that we must never lose our human touch. Every life entrusted to us deserves to be treated with reverence.

The Silent Mentor Program is not just a part of my medical training, it is a cornerstone of the doctor I hope to become.

I recently had the profound privilege of participating in the Silent Mentor Program, honouring the life and legacy of Mr. Goh—our mentor in death and teacher in silence. Over the course of the programme, I took part in every aspect—from the home visit and preparatory workshops to the final memorial service. Each moment left an indelible mark on my heart, shaping not only the way I learn but also the kind of doctor I aspire to become.

Meeting Mr. Goh’s family was a deeply moving experience. Listening to stories of his life, his values, and his quiet strength reminded me that behind everybody lies a soul—a person who laughed, loved, struggled, and ultimately chose to give their final act to serve future generations of doctors. It humanised the learning process in a way that no textbook ever could. His decision to donate his body was not just an act of generosity; it was a powerful gesture of hope and trust in our hands and hearts.

During the workshops, I was constantly struck by more than just the anatomical knowledge we gained. Each session was imbued with a quiet reverence. Every incision was made not with detachment, but with gratitude. They gave us lessons no simulation could replicate. Through their sacrifice, they taught us the essence of humility, dignity, and service.

It wasn’t just Mr. Goh. All four mentors—each with their own story, their own journey—gave us far more than we could ever return. They reminded me why I chose this path. Medicine, at its core, is not just about diagnosing and treating diseases. It is about honouring life, understanding suffering, and offering comfort with compassion. Even in death, our mentors continued to teach us what it truly means to care.

The Silent Mentor Program has deepened my empathy, reinforced my ethical compass, and reminded me that everybody we study is a vessel of someone’s hopes, dreams, and memories. Our mentors were not just anatomical donors. They were our first real teachers. They were reminders that the most powerful lessons in medicine are not always spoken—they are felt, remembered, and carried forward. To them, I owe more than knowledge. I owe a promise: to honour their gift by becoming a doctor worthy of their sacrifice.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my medical journey so far. Learning from someone who gave their body to science in complete silence was both humbling and powerful. It was a reminder that teaching doesn’t always come through words—sometimes, the most profound lessons are given in quiet selflessness.

Through this experience, I gained more than just anatomical knowledge. I developed a deeper sense of respect for the human body and a greater awareness of the responsibilities I carry as a future healthcare professional. The hands-on learning was invaluable, but what left the greatest impact was the emotional connection and gratitude I felt toward my mentor.

I feel immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the Silent Mentor Program. My silent mentor, Tan Hao Enn, or Hao Enn, has left a lasting impact on me—not just through the workshop, but through the journey of getting to know him and his story.

Before the workshop began, we had the chance to meet Hao Enn’s family. Being able to connect with them and hear stories about his life allowed me to understand his values and outlook on life. It helped me build a sense of empathy and reminded me that behind everybody donated lies a person with a meaningful life, filled with love and purpose. I truly felt happy and honoured to know him more deeply.

Throughout the workshop, I learned so much—both technically and emotionally. I was able to perform various hands-on procedures and gain early clinical exposure that will definitely benefit me in my journey as a future doctor. More than that, it reminded me of the importance of humility and respect when caring for others.

As the workshop ends, I am filled with deep gratitude for Hao Enn and all the silent mentors who made this possible. Their bravery and selflessness in donating their bodies for the betterment of others is nothing short of inspiring. I am proud to have been part of something so meaningful.

41st Silent Mentor Workshop • 15-20 Apr 2025

I am truly grateful to have participated in the Silent Mentor Program. This experience provided a rare and invaluable opportunity to practice clinical skills hands-on and to truly appreciate the intricate anatomy and texture of a real human body. While models and textbooks are important in building our foundation, they can only take us so far—ultimately, we are called to treat real people with real human bodies.

I was deeply moved by the selfless sacrifice of our silent mentors. They were once living individuals, with stories, families, and dreams, and yet they chose to dedicate their final gift to the advancement of medical education. Reflecting on the short but meaningful life of my mentor, the late Tan Hao Enn, who passed away at the tender age of 20, reminded me of the profound fragility and preciousness of life. His silent teaching will forever remain etched in my memory, inspiring me to become a more compassionate and respectful future doctor.

It was an honour to be part of the Silent Mentor Program. From learning about the life stories of our mentors to acquiring surgical and clinical skills, every moment was deeply humbling. What touched me most was the selflessness and love embodied by the silent mentors — strangers who gave us the most precious gift of all, even in death. Our mentors was once a filial son, a loving mother, a passionate educator, and a hardworking provider to his family.

Their quiet generosity moved me deeply and left an imprint on my heart. It made me pause and reflect: What kind of life do I want to live? How can I contribute to my community? How would I want to impact my loved ones?

Through this journey, I came to understand that death is not merely an end, but a point of completion — a final act of giving that continues to spark learning, compassion, and growth in others. I aspire to embody compassion in my career.

The Silent Mentor Program at the Universiti Malaya transformed my understanding of medicine as I learned not only clinical skills like suturing and intubation from Mr. Lim, our silent mentor, but also the deeper values of empathy, respect, and service; meeting his family and hearing about his kind, generous life helped me see him as more than just a donor, inspiring me to honor his legacy through compassionate care and reminding me that every lesson in medicine is intertwined with the human connection and gratitude we owe to those who pave the way for future generations.

Being part of this Silent Mentor Program was a new experience for me. I had the chance to connect with strangers, respect a stranger and his life endeavors and even build friendships with my colleagues which allowed us to work together like a well-oiled machine. Reflecting on this, these are essentially the same experiences a doctor, journeying through their medical life, embarks on. Understanding a patient and their family allows one to carry out a responsibility to treat fellow mankind with the utmost sincerity and compassion. Moreover, teamwork among colleagues is paramount to achieve holistic care for the patient. This program instilled values such as responsibility, dedication, teamwork, respect and commitment which are the hallmark values of a true doctor.

The Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply meaningful experience for me as a medical student. Through Mr. Lim Tim Soi’s selfless donation, I not only gained valuable procedural skills and a deeper understanding of human anatomy but also learned life lessons in compassion, respect, and empathy.

Mr. Lim’s life story is one of resilience and dedication. Despite many challenges, he lived with humility and kindness, always placing others before himself. His decision to become a Silent Mentor was a continuation of his lifelong service to others—a testament to his generosity and love.

During the dissections, we treated his body with the utmost respect, knowing that this was not just a scientific experience but a gift of trust. Mr. Lim’s willingness to share his body has shaped my growth not only as a future doctor but also as a person.

His family’s strength and support of his decision are deeply admirable. I am grateful for their sacrifice and hope they know that Mr. Lim’s legacy will live on through all of us. His words, encouraging us to maintain a pure and joyful heart, will continue to inspire me to approach every patient with empathy and dignity.

Thank you, Mr. Lim, for this invaluable gift. I will always carry your lessons in my heart.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop last week. Throughout the workshop, as well as during its planning stages, I had the chance to observe and learn invaluable lessons.

My groupmates and I developed a meaningful connection with the family of our Silent Mentor, Mr. Lim Tim Soi. Through learning about his life—his journey from birth to his final moments—we gained insight into his role within his family and the way he lived. It became clear how deeply he was loved and cherished by those close to him. This connection inspired us to treat all our mentors with the utmost respect, with the shared goal of becoming better doctors through this experience. Even the daily routine of preparing our Silent Mentor each morning taught us essential lessons in patience and proper patient care.

The workshop itself was incredibly beneficial, teaching us vital skills like suturing, chest tube insertion, and CVL insertion. The trainers were not only knowledgeable but also able to impart their expertise in a structured, time-efficient manner. The hands-on experience, which can't be replicated in textbooks, was essential for our professional development.

During the funeral ceremony, I gained a greater understanding of cultural diversity and developed a deeper respect for different beliefs. Although we never met our Silent Mentor while he was alive, we felt a strong bond with him as his mentees. We shared in the family’s grief and loss, an experience that enriched both my medical journey and my personal growth.

This entire experience has not only made me a better doctor but also a better human being. I hope this program reaches more people and continues to positively impact the community.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been nothing but an unforgettable experience for me. The more I reflect on the things I have done within the past week, the more I realise that I really could not have gained what I did anywhere else. I admit that the medical knowledge and the opportunity to execute multiple procedural skills was a big part of the reason I joined this in the first place, but I did not expect the gift in disguise that came with it until the very last day when it all ended.

It was a gift of lessons. Caring for each of our mentors every morning and night throughout the week was indeed no easy task but I believe it played a pivotal role in connecting us all with our teacher, an individual who put everything else before himself. Meeting the families again at the end of the workshop was also such a heartwarming moment for me. I often wondered at how they could still be expressing gratitude with such big smiles on their faces when it was us who had received so much from their selflessness. I really could not thank them enough.

“Be human first before you become a doctor”. I shall heed these words spoken by one of the mentor’s family members to us all. I believe this experience has truly taught me the meaning of sacrifice, compassion and kindness; humane values one should possess in an aim to serve others, just as a doctor to his/her patients.

The Silent Mentor Workshop has been a deeply humbling and transformative experience. Beyond enhancing my technical knowledge and skills, it has taught me the true essence of empathy, compassion, and respect in the medical field. From home visit, pre-workshop preparation, to workshop and sending off, being involved in every part of the program makes me understand how precious this opportunity is. Our Silent Mentors' selfless sacrifice has reminded me that medicine is not just about science but about humanity. This experience has reinforced the importance of treating patients with dignity and care. I am truly grateful to the mentors, organizers, and my friends for this invaluable journey. I am truly grateful for this invaluable learning opportunity made possible by the selfless donation of our silent mentor. This experience has deepened my understanding of the human body in ways that no textbook ever could. I sincerely appreciate the dedication of our lecturers in guiding us through this journey with respect and professionalism and the family who are willing to respect the patient's decision which enables us to have the opportunity to learn. This event has not only enriched my medical knowledge but also reinforced the profound responsibility we carry as future doctors. I will always remember what our mentor said: Treat every patient as if they are our family, they can feel the difference. I truly appreciate that I am privileged enough to join this event.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply humbling and transformative experience, as it has taught me a great deal about humanity, empathy, and gratitude. Learning about Madam Ng Ah Moi’s life through her loved ones’ stories allowed me to see her not just as a donor but as a person who had lived a meaningful life. This experience has helped me appreciate the selflessness of those who choose to give, even in death, so that others may learn and grow.

Most of the Silent Mentors are incredibly generous individuals who believe in giving rather than receiving. Witnessing this made me reflect on my own values and how I can strive to be a better, more compassionate person. Being involved from the home visit to the final farewell ceremony was both eye-opening and deeply emotional. One of the most profound moments was the sending-off ceremony, where we honoured and expressed our gratitude to our Silent Mentor. It reminded me of the fragility of life and how, one day, we may also face the same journey. This realization strengthened my commitment to treating every patient with dignity, kindness, and respect. In conclusion, this program is not just about learning medical skills but about shaping us into doctors who practice with both knowledge and a compassionate heart. I am deeply grateful for this experience, which will stay with me throughout my medical career.

For me, the Silent Mentor Program has been a truly unique experience. It has not only taught me skills and knowledge that cannot be acquired from medical textbooks but also instilled in me the importance of honoring and respecting life in all its forms.

Waking up early every morning for five consecutive days to care for Madam Ng’s body was no simple task, but I have never regretted it. In fact, I am deeply honored to have had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to express my gratitude and respect to these Silent Mentors.

The most valuable lesson I have learned from this program is the importance of empathy and always putting myself in the shoes of the patient. As a medical student, I have clerked many patients, but it is impossible to fully understand each of them. The Silent Mentor Program offered me the precious chance to truly walk through the life of our patient. From the interview with her family, I learned that Madam Ng was a strong, resilient woman, and, at the same time, an optimistic soul who always brought joy to her loved ones. I also learnt about her birthplace, hobbies, personality, and even cherished childhood memories. This experience touched me deeply, as it marked the first time, I truly felt a bond with a patient—reminding me of why I chose to become a doctor: not only to treat medical conditions but to also ensure the well-being of a patient’s mind and spirit.

It has been tremendously enlightening and humbling to be a part of Universiti Malaya's Silent Mentor Program. Along with developing a deeper grasp of human anatomy, specifically the abdomen, forearm, hand, and hernias, it gave me the chance to practise vital medical skills like suturing and the insertion of nasogastric (NG) and endotracheal (ETT) tubes.

Beyond the technical abilities, the opportunity to talk with my mentor's family and learn about her life story was what really made this experience unique. Hearing their stories gave me a deeper appreciation of her selfless contribution and reminded me of the humanity behind medicine.

This program has not only enhanced my medical knowledge but has also shaped my perspective on empathy, respect, and the lifelong impact of those who teach us through their final gift. I will carry these lessons with me in my future practice.

First and foremost, I am honoured to be given the opportunity and to be trusted to be in charged for our Silent Mentor Mdm Ng Ah Moi.

After about 2 weeks of joining Silent Mentor, the act of taking care, cleaning and handling our SM had increased my empathy towards patients. Every incision and suturing made with gratitude for the learning opportunity. I have realised that the sacrifice and contribution made by all the five SM is for the good for our future patients in which to ensure we provide the best care for our future patients - not only treating the disease but care for the psychosocial aspect.

Last but not least, a lot of gratitude for SM Ng Ah Moi and family for this experience as it is a priceless experience that cannot be obtained anywhere else.

We participated in the Silent Mentor Program from the 1st till 16th February, 2025. It started off with the home visit, where we got to listen to entire family members narrate to the lives our mentors led. This built a connection between us and our mentors as we developed empathy and even more care for them.

Week later we proceeded with the thawing of our silent mentors, followed by cleaning and preparing them for the initiation ceremony. The initiation ceremony was the emotional bit of the program as it became very real that the family members were bidding their final goodbyes to their loved ones. The 40th Silent Mentor Workshop consisted of more female mentors than male, meaning the family members had to say goodbye to their wives and mothers that day, which made my heart heavy as I have a close-knit relationship with my mother.

After the initiation ceremony, we participated in the workshops which comprised of chest tube insertion, intubation, interosseous, central venous line insertion and suturing. As medical students, we are rarely served the opportunity to perform these procedures on real life patients as we are still in the early stages of our learning, and we have a long journey to complete. Therefore, experiencing this part of the program was truly an unforgettable one, one that I learned so incredibly from. With every suture, I made mistakes, I learned, and I corrected them.

Then came the anatomy workshop, where we had the opportunity to feel certain parts of the body, especially internal organs. You will not be able to experience this anywhere else apart from the operating theatre.

All in all, I am extremely grateful for this experience being in the silent mentor program. They taught me empathy alongside enhancing my skills in the journey to becoming a great doctor. What separates a good doctor, and a great one is the ability to have a heart and show kindness to all of your patients, which is something I hope to have achieved from the program.

I am deeply grateful to be a participant in the Silent Mentor Workshop. It has taught me so much about the bright side of humanity: the selflessness, the courage, the love. The silent mentors and their families placed immense trust in us, breaking the traditional belief of preserving the deceased body undisturbed, and instead, offering us the invaluable opportunity to learn and grow. I hope to honour their trust by becoming a better person and doctor. May all the silent mentors rest in peace, and may their families live fulfilling lives.

The greatest paradox in life is how those who have the least always give to others the most. And that couldn’t be truer for all 5 of our silent mentors. Learning about their lives humbled me. Though their life was full of toil from day one, they still chose to give at the end of their life, without expecting anything in return except for the hope that their students would give back to the community and become good doctors.

The Silent Mentor Program truly enriched our learning experience in medical school. The hands-on experience to practice our skills were invaluable. My favourite station was learning how to insert chest tube as I was given the opportunity to perform the procedure from start to finish, one which would be immensely helpful to me as a future houseman. Prior to this we could only read about or watch videos about the procedure, however, because of SMP, I was able to feel the rib cages and how to penetrate the pleural cavity successfully. Performing the procedure definitely cannot compare to just reading about it.

I have gained so much insight from participating in SMP, both medical and non-medical related. I hope more students participate in future SMP and can fully benefit from the program and the sacrifice of the silent mentors so that one day we are all able to be better, dignified and empathetic doctors to society. Hopefully, we do not merely treat the body but also tend to the souls of everyone we are privileged to encounter on this short journey on Earth.

The Silent Mentor Program was a deeply enriching experience that has left an indelible mark on my final year in medical school. Through this program, I was provided with hands-on experiences on many life-saving procedures and gained a better understanding of human anatomy. Besides, I did not only gain technical knowledge. From my mentor, I learnt so much, especially from the way she approached life - with compassion, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence These qualities will serve as a constant source of inspiration for me. The importance of empathy, humility, and ethics in medicine was also one of the greatest takeaway from this program. I learnt that treating patients should not be seen as a case on its own but as caring for individuals with their own stories, emotions, and experiences. As the saying goes, "Treat the patient, not the disease." I am grateful and moved by the selfless act of each mentor as well as the recognition and trust that our mentor's family members placed on us. Moving forward, I will carry the knowledge and lessons learnt during Silent Mentor Program throughout my career.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program was truly an eye-opening experience. I did not realise how the program was able to convey the meaning of empathy and kindness when treating a patient. Ever since the visit to my mentor’s home, and hearing about my mentor’s wonderful life story from her blissful family members, I realise the importance in taking care of my mentor’s body during the workshop. From this experience, I have realised a deeper understanding towards our patient of care will reflect to a better care being provided towards them. The Silent Mentor Program not only enable us to practice and sharpen our medical skills, anatomical knowledge, etc., it also engraved core values such as kindness, compassion and self-discipline within us. I am grateful to be able to learn from my mentor. I am also deeply thankful towards my mentor’s family who welcomed us with open arms and selflessly helped to impart the beautiful life story of my mentor to us. Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an unforgettable experience for me as a medical student. I had the opportunity to perform hands-on procedures like chest tube insertion, ETT placement, and suturing, which not only helped me improve my skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of these techniques in a real-world setting. However, the experience went far beyond just the technical aspects. On an emotional and spiritual level, it had a profound impact on me. The Mentor’s kindness and her willingness to contribute to our learning journey left a lasting impression. I felt a deep sense of gratitude and respect for her, as well as for her family. They were so supportive and welcoming throughout the program. Their generosity and openness made me realize the true meaning of selflessness and compassion in medicine. The way they embraced us as learners, with such warmth and understanding, reminded me that at the heart of being a good doctor is a commitment to helping others with empathy and care. This experience has inspired me to carry these values into my own career by always remembering the importance of humility, kindness, and personal growth in the practice of medicine.

I am grateful to be part of the Silent Mentor Program and to be given the opportunity to participate in multiple workshops. As a student, I found the hands-on session throughout the workshop to be particularly useful as it has given me an insight as to how better to perform procedures. Procedures such as Chest tube insertion and suturing which were mainly taught on textbook became much easier to understand when carried out practically. Besides that, the program has shaped me to also be disciplined and treat every patient with dignity and respect. As my mentor Madam Loo said to us in writings, "every incision you make into my body will enable you to learn more on how to save the living" Even though my mentor was unable to express pain, we were taught to treat her with respect. In doing so, she offered us invaluable experiences which would help us along our journey as doctors as well as our future patients.

Lastly, the program's home visit has been an amazing platform to learn about my mentor and her family. My mentor has brought my team and her family closer than before even though we had no blood ties. I was able to learn so much from her life and even with her passing, her selfless dedication and contributions towards the society furthered inspired me to be the better version of myself. That is to transcend beyond boundaries and to always help others in need in every way possible.

The program has truly been an amazing experience. I enjoyed the learning process as well as the bond created throughout the session.

The Silent Mentor Program is, in my opinion, one of the best experiences I’ve had in medical school with its numerous benefits, both personal and professional, for participants. This program, which involves learning from donated cadavers (our mentors), provides invaluable hands-on medical training while instilling deep respect for human dignity. Unlike textbooks or mannequins, each donated body is unique, allowing us to study real anatomical variations and the complexities of human structures. These exposure help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in real-life medical scenarios. Although the five years in medical school have taught us a great deal about professionalism and ethics, I believe, this program has pushed the boundaries of empathy, compassion and respect for our beloved mentors and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The emphasis on the life’s journey of our mentors truly makes you feel connected to them, to make sure we do right by them although they do not walk amongst us anymore. The Silent Mentor Program is not just an anatomy class—it’s a lesson in gratitude, humility, and responsibility. It transforms students into doctors who see beyond symptoms and diseases, recognizing the person behind every patient. Thank you Madam Loo, Mr Tham, Eugene and Justin. Thank you Silent Mentor Program for giving me another family. I am eternally grateful.

The Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my medical school life. It taught me not only about the human body but also about compassion, respect, and the true meaning of selflessness.

I feel deeply grateful to the mentors who, even in passing, chose to teach and guide us. Their generosity allowed us to gain hands-on learning that no book or lecture could ever provide. I also able to meet and build connection with mentor’s family member.

Through this program, I have come to appreciate the human side of medicine, reminding me that behind every patient is a person with a story, a family, and a life lived. I also have a great time spending time with my groupmates. Even though all of us in different posting and have our own busy schedules, but we still manage to make time and learnt together in this event. This experience has shaped my perspective on patient care. It has inspired me to always approach my future patients with kindness, humility, and gratitude, ensuring that I honour the trust placed in me—just as our silent mentors did.

With a heart full of gratitude, I am forever grateful to our five incredible individuals who, in their final act of kindness, became our greatest teachers. Their selfless gift has given us the privilege to learn in ways no textbook ever could. Through them, we have gained not only medical knowledge but also compassion, humility, and a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a healer.

Every incision we made was guided by their trust. Every observation deepened our appreciation for the art and science of medicine. But beyond anatomy, they have taught us respect and gratitude—reminding us that medicine is not just about knowledge, but about service. Their generosity will forever shape the way we care for our future patients.

Among these incredible individuals, we would like to especially honour our Silent Mentor, Madam Kee. Madam Kee lived by the belief that it is a greater fortune to give than to receive. In life, she dedicated herself to helping others, and in passing, she continued to uphold this value by giving us the priceless opportunity to learn from her.

Because of her generosity, we were able to practice life-saving procedures, preparing us to treat real patients with confidence and competence. Throughout this program, we didn’t just see her selflessness—we felt it. Every moment spent learning from her was a testament to her unwavering spirit of giving.

To Madam Kee and all our Silent Mentors, we thank you. Your final gift will live on in every patient we heal and every life we touch. And to the families, we extend our deepest appreciation—your loved ones have made an immeasurable impact on us, and for that, we are forever grateful. Participating in the Silent Mentor Program was a deeply humbling and transformative experience. Through this program, I had the privilege of learning from Mdm Kee, a selfless individual who donated her body for medical education.

The journey was not just about anatomy but also about respect, gratitude, and human connection. The hands-on workshops allowed me to gain invaluable medical knowledge, while the act of cleaning Mdm Kee’s body and preparing her for the coffining ceremony reinforced the importance of dignity in death. The most emotional moment was listening to heartfelt speeches from her family, which reminded me that behind every Silent Mentor is a life full of love, sacrifice, and memories.

This experience has profoundly shaped my perspective on medicine, emphasizing the need for compassion and respect in patient care. Mdm Kee’s generosity will forever inspire me to be a better doctor and a kinder human being.

The Silent Mentor Program was an intense yet deeply meaningful experience. Our silent mentors showed incredible selflessness by contributing to medical education, giving us the opportunity to practise and develop essential skills. Their families’ generosity was just as profound in supporting this program and honouring the mentors’ final wishes. Beyond gaining medical knowledge, this experience reminded me that compassion should always come first. Handling someone’s loved one until the end of their journey is an honour that reinforced the importance of respect and empathy in medicine. I am truly grateful for this opportunity to refine my hands-on skills and hope to continuously improve so I can provide the best care for my future patients.

I am truly grateful to have participated in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop. I cherished every part of the experience, from the online home visit to the final moments of the closing ceremony. Over the course of just one week, I developed a deep connection with my Silent Mentor and her family, even though we had never met before.

Each morning, we would wake up early to clean our mentors, comb their hair, and prepare them for their final journey—small yet meaningful acts of respect and gratitude. What touched me the most was the coffining session. It was my first time witnessing such a moment, and for an instant, it felt as if I had known Madam Kee for a long time.

This workshop was more than just an opportunity to learn; it was a deeply moving experience that reinforced the values of compassion, humility, and gratitude. Madam Kee’s selfless gift will always stay with me, guiding me in my journey as a future doctor.

I first participated in the Silent Mentor Program, hoping to learn medical skills, but I have received something far more invaluable - lessons about empathy, selflessness and love. From the day we conducted the home visit and built a connection between the student participants and the family members, to the workshops where we learn as much as we could with a heart full of respect and gratitude, to the sending off ceremony, this is truly a week to be forever remembered. During the closing ceremony, the speeches deeply touched me, and I realised the beauty of “turning a loss into a gift", as all our Silent Mentor’s contributions will forever be etched in our medical journey.

I will be eternally grateful to our Silent Mentor, Madam Kee Kim Lan. Her life journey is a story full of love, kindness and wisdom, and her courage and optimism when navigating through life's troubles are truly admirable.

Thank you, Madam Kee, and I will hold dear to your words of advice for all of us.

Participating in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop was an incredibly humbling and transformative experience. It provided me with a unique opportunity to practice procedural skills and deepen my understanding of human anatomy through hands-on learning, while also fostering empathy and respect for our mentors who selflessly donated their bodies. The journey began with a home visit to the mentors' loved ones, where I was privileged to learn about their life stories, and culminated in the emotional moment of coffining. This experience not only enriched my medical knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for the generosity and sacrifice of those who made such a profound contribution to our education.

We walked into the room as students, eager to learn. But what we received was far more than medical knowledge—it was a lesson on humanity, selflessness, and the weight of trust.

My Silent Mentor lay before me, motionless yet teaching me more than any textbook ever could. Each incision was deliberate, each movement carried the weight of knowing that this was once a living person — someone who laughed, cried, loved, and was loved in return. And yet, in their final act, they chose to give—to let strangers like me learn from them, even in death.

I made mistakes. My hands were not always steady. My sutures were not always perfect. And every time I faltered, my heart was clenched with guilt. I wanted to whisper, I’m sorry. But each time I looked up, my mentor lay there, silent yet forgiving. In that silence, I heard something deeper than words: It’s okay. Try again.

It was at that moment that I understood—this was not just an anatomy lesson. This was a gift of trust, a final act of unconditional generosity. My Silent Mentor did not just donate a body; they donated their final chapter to our hands, believing that we would carry their lesson forward.

As we carefully placed them back, piece by piece, I realized we were not just closing a body, we were closing a story, one that would live on through us. Medicine is not just about knowing where to cut, but about knowing how to heal—with skill, with compassion, with profound respect for the life that came before us.

To my Silent Mentor, Mdm Weng: You are not truly gone. You will live with every patient I touch; in every decision I make as a doctor. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

The Silent Mentor Program was a truly meaningful experience for me. At first, I thought it was just a way to learn clinical skills, but I soon realized it was much more than that. Through this program, I not only gained medical knowledge but also learned the importance of empathy and respect for my mentor.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned was about my mentor’s life. My mentor led a humble yet meaningful life. Learning about her background made me feel a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. It reminded me that every patient I treat in the future is not just a case but a person with a story.

During the program, I also developed a greater appreciation for the selfless contribution of my mentor and their family. Their generosity allowed me to practice and improve my skills without fear of making mistakes. This experience has taught me to always treat my patients with kindness, dignity, and care.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity. It has shaped me not only as a medical student but also as a more compassionate person. Moving forward, I will carry these lessons with me, ensuring that I treat every patient with both skill and heart.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my final year in medical school. Through the home visit, I had the privilege of learning about my mentor’s beautiful life. Initially, I questioned the purpose of this visit, but in the end, I realized that it deepened my appreciation for the Silent Mentor Program even more.

Each morning, we respectfully cleaned the bodies, ensuring they were treated with dignity. Before touching them, we performed proper rituals, reinforcing the respect and gratitude we held for our mentors. The most meaningful part of the program was the opportunity to practice surgical skills under the direct guidance of trained surgeons and doctors. Thanks to our mentors’ selfless sacrifice, I was able to gain invaluable hands-on experience that will shape me into a better doctor. At the end of the program, we bid farewell to our mentors with a proper send-off. Attending the funeral at the memorial park was a first-time experience for me, and it left a profound impact on me. This is truly an experience I will never forget.

Overall, I am deeply grateful for this journey and especially thankful to my mentor, who selflessly donated her body for our learning. I promise to study hard and become a better doctor in honor of her sacrifice.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Workshop was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was also the first time I came so close to understanding the process of death, not just from a medical perspective but on a deeply human level. This workshop is not all about anatomy, procedures and gaining clinical experience. Most importantly, it is about respect for the departed and gratitude for the selfless gift of their bodies. One of the most meaningful aspects of the workshop was the opportunity for us students to go for a home visit, where we could truly understand our mentor’s background and appreciate them as a person who once lived, loved, and had a story of their own. Witnessing the diverse lives and experiences of each mentor gave me a profound appreciation for their generosity and a deeper meaning of life. Though our time with the family members was limited, I still think that there was an invisible bond that connected us together. All in all, the emotions, lessons, and reflections from this experience will definitely stay with us and brought along throughout our medical journey.

I am beyond grateful to have participated in this Silent Mentor Program and honored to have met the silent mentors, who were truly selfless and inspiring. The life stories of Mdm Weng, shared by her daughter, reminded me that the mentors were individuals who had once lived full lives and were deeply loved, yet chose to dedicate their final act to contributing to the medical community. Their generosity and selflessness inspired me to approach this learning experience with the utmost respect and dignity. Throughout the week, I experienced a mix of emotions. I felt curious before the program began, followed by deep sadness during the initiation and send-off ceremonies. At times, I felt guilty, worrying that I had not treated the mentors’ bodies with enough care. During the cleaning and closing process, a profound sense of responsibility weighed on me. All these thoughts and feelings made me realize that every moment in this program carried a deeper meaning beyond just medical learning. It taught me that medicine is not only about knowledge and skills but also about the importance of respect, gratitude, and kindness when treating patients, regardless of their background. Despite the hectic week, the invaluable lessons from this program will shape me into a compassionate and responsible doctor, committed to providing the best care for my patients in the future. Lastly, I sincerely hope that the silent mentors will rest in peace and that their family members will find comfort and pride in the lasting impact their loved ones have made on the community.

Being woken up daily by my 6am alarm clock was a routine I dreaded everyday throughout the program week and it made me question my decision on joining the Silent Mentor Program. However, upon completion of the program and after reflecting, I now see the meaning behind the tedious work and hours that is expected of us students. Madam Weng, my silent mentor who graciously devoted herself to this program continues to teach me about human dignity, compassion, and the importance of treating every patient - living or deceased - with utmost respect. I look back and ponder upon the weekends and after class hours that I previously felt was a huge sacrifice, but in reality, it cannot compare to the sacrifice Madam Weng has contributed.

As I attend each session, I learn to appreciate the life my mentor has lived, and I think about her family who has supported her decision to contribute to medical education even after death. I am also able to realize the practical aspects of what I read and study in textbooks through the workshops which will be invaluable to my future medical practice. This unconventional hands-on experience has strengthened my understanding of anatomical relationships and surgical approaches. Perhaps most importantly, these experiences have reinforced my commitment and will shape my attitude and ethical framework to this career path that I have chosen.

What strikes me most is the deep sense of respect and gratitude that permeates every aspect of the program. I am grateful that I was given this once in a lifetime unique opportunity to learn from my honor mentor and am thankful the organizers behind the program that has managed it so well holistically. Last but not least, this program has made me see death in a different lens and will continue to aspire me to be the best version of myself as a medical student and doctor later.

Servanthood, sacrifice, and self-improvement. These were the cornerstones of Mdm Teu’s life, values she carried with quiet strength and grace. As our silent mentor, she gave her final and most selfless lesson—one that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

When I first joined the Silent Mentor Program, I treated it as just another requirement. I was nonchalant, detached, and—to my shame—lacking empathy. The idea of visiting our silent mentor’s family felt like a formality, something unnecessary. Why should we delve into their personal lives? I couldn't see the purpose then. But that changed the moment I stepped into Mdm Teu’s home. It was not just a house; it was a living testament to a woman deeply loved. Her husband’s quiet grief, her sons’ pride and sorrow as they shared stories, her friends’ laughter tinged with tears—all these revealed the kind of person she was. Mdm Teu was not just our silent mentor; she was a wife, a mother, a friend, a human being who had touched so many lives. And now, even in death, she was touching ours.

Each day we prepared her body, I began to understand the depth of her sacrifice. Her body, once a vessel of life and love, became a bridge for medical education—a gift beyond measure. We practiced sutures and procedures, skills essential for saving lives, all because of her. With each moment spent cleaning her body, I felt an unspoken dialogue between us, as if she were teaching us something far greater than anatomy: the value of humility, gratitude, and humanity. The sending-off ceremony was the most heart-wrenching moment. As her family gathered around, their tears flowed freely, and their pain became ours. In that moment, it struck me: Mdm Teu’s body was not just a gift to us as medical students; it was her family’s most precious goodbye. The depth of their love and loss was laid bare, and I felt utterly humbled. How could I have been so blind to the humanity behind this program?

Mdm Teu’s sacrifice opened my eyes to a truth I had ignored: Medicine cannot exist without empathy. It is not just about curing disease or performing procedures; it is about seeing the person behind the illness, understanding their story, and cherishing their humanity.

This programme has forever changed me. It taught me discipline, teamwork, and, above all, the sacred responsibility we have as healers. Mdm Teu taught me that every patient we meet carries a story—of love, loss, and a life lived fully. To honor her legacy, I will carry this lesson with me in every patient I treat.

To Mdm Teu and her family, I am profoundly grateful. Her life, her sacrifice, and her final act of generosity have carved into me a new understanding of what it means to heal. Mdm Teu gave me more than knowledge; she gave me a heart.

The Silent Mentor Program was a transformative and humbling experience that deeply enriched my journey as a medical student. This body donation program me offered me an unparalleled opportunity to learn practical skills and medical procedures firsthand—something that textbooks alone could never replicate. The chance to work with a Silent Mentor, someone who selflessly donated their body for our education, was both an honour and a profound responsibility.

Initially, I felt nervous about participating in this program. The idea of working directly with a donor’s body brought a mix of apprehension and uncertainty. However, as the program unfolded, I became more comfortable and developed a deeper sense of purpose. The structured approach and supportive environment created by the team ensured that I could focus on learning and honouring the donor’s legacy. I was able to practice procedures such as suturing, injections, and more under expert guidance, and this hands-on experience helped bridge the gap between theory and practice.

What stood out most to me was the respect and dignity with which the entire team approached the Silent Mentor. This wasn’t just a scientific exercise—it was a tribute to the life and generosity of the donor. Meeting the family of my Silent Mentor and learning about their background and personal history added a profoundly human element to the experience. It reminded me that behind every donation lies a story, a life lived with hopes and dreams, and a family that made the courageous decision to support medical education. I was deeply moved by how meticulously the donors were cared for.

Cleaning and preparing them every morning became a ritual that reinforced the respect and gratitude we all felt. This level of care was not just an act of professionalism; it reflected the values that this program instils in its participants. This program taught me more than just clinical skills. It reminded me of the importance of empathy, respect, and gratitude in the medical profession. As I practiced various procedures, I was acutely aware that I was learning from someone’s final act of generosity. It was a stark reminder of the trust and responsibility placed in us as future healthcare providers.

The Silent Mentor Program is truly a golden opportunity. It provided me with invaluable practical experience while emphasizing the importance of human connection in medicine. I am grateful to have been part of such a meaningful initiative. This experience has left an indelible mark on me, and I will carry the lessons I’ve learned—both technical and ethical—throughout my career. In conclusion, this program is more than just a learning platform; it is a profound reminder of the selflessness that forms the foundation of medical education and practice. I feel immense gratitude to my Silent Mentor and their family for their gift, and I hope to honour their legacy by becoming a compassionate and skilled doctor.

Silent mentor has been in my bucket list before graduating from UM MBBS since I enrolled in 1st year. I thought that it would be a unique and valuable experience to join especially since UM is one of the few institutions that carry out this program.

Now, I am in my final year, and I finally got the chance to join. My expectations were completely different to what I experienced but in a good way. I expected this program to give insight and exposure to surgical skills and better equip us to become competent doctors. While that was true, I eventually realised that there was a bigger objective and learning point to it than that.

This program offered something that I will never get anywhere else, which is teaching the humility and empathy that a doctor should have when treating their patients. It was humbling to follow through my silent mentor's entire life journey, while also being put on the spotlight in front of their grieving family members. It taught me that every single action I take on my patients, whether they end up alive or dead, will carry on its impact to so many other people that they are attached to. We can never treat the entire world, but we can however, treat one person's entire world.

In conclusion, after going through this program I pledge to become not only a skillful and competent doctor, but also a humble and empathetic one. I am grateful to be given this opportunity to join Silent Mentor Program.

Through the Silent Mentor Program, I have experienced lessons that transcend words. This program has not only honed my clinical skills but has also deepened my understanding of the humanity within medicine. A moment that profoundly moved me was during a gratitude speech by a colleague, who reflected, "Every time I made a mistake during the workshop, it felt like you were still there, encouraging me with, 'It's okay, try again.'” Hearing those words brought me to tears, as they encapsulated the grace and generosity of our Silent Mentors.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in this program. Words cannot fully express my gratitude to the Silent Mentors, who selflessly donated their bodies for the advancement of medical education, nor to their families, whose courage and kindness made this invaluable experience possible.

To the families, thank you for your extraordinary gift and trust in us. Your loved ones have left a profound legacy that will guide and inspire us throughout our medical journey. I promise to honor their memory by striving to be the best doctor I can be, with compassion and humility at the heart of my practice.

It was indeed a blessing for us to have Mdm Teu as our silent mentor, and I pray and hope that the family members will continue to be strong and courageous even as they continue with their journey in life.

I’m beyond grateful for the willingness and sacrificial act of all the mentors as they dedicate their bodies to the learning of medical students and doctors. Knowing Mdm Teu’s background helped me to know her and appreciate her more as a mentor.

Throughout the process, we managed to perform procedures that we usually only get to observe ourselves, and we gained a clearer picture of how human bodies look. It really made me think about how important it is for me to learn to do things properly and eventually become a safe doctor.

Being able to send off my mentor is such a privilege, but I really empathise with her husband, as he was drenched in tears throughout the send-off. Knowing that life and death are inevitable, and believing in Christ, I am assured that there is a life beyond the physical life on earth. To me, apart from being sad over the loss of someone I love, I will also rejoice because it’s the beginning of eternal life!

It was indeed a blessing for us to have Mdm Teu as our silent mentor, and I pray and hope that her family members will continue to be strong and courageous as they carry on with their journey in life.

I still remember when I first heard about the "Silent Mentor" Program as I entered the MBBS program. At that time, I didn’t feel much about the concept of donating bodies after passing. However, my perspective changed profoundly after participating in the SMP. I am deeply grateful and in awe of the bravery of the Silent Mentors who made the decision to donate their bodies for medical education. I am also moved by the families who supported this decision and demonstrated incredible strength in facing the loss of their loved ones—what I would describe as a double sacrifice.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the organisers and all the volunteers of the SMP, who guided us throughout the program and taught us how to be sensitive to the feelings of the families. Although it was just a two-hour home visit, it felt as though I had become deeply involved in the life of our Silent Mentor, especially after the introductory presentations where we learned about her. We spoke of our Silent Mentor’s life as though we had known her for a long time, like a close friend or family member.

During the workshops, I did my best to handle the body with the utmost respect, practicing neat sutures after each incision. One phrase my peer shared with me stuck in my mind: "Never mind, try again." This has resonated with me since. “Made as many mistakes as possible on me, I wouldn’t feel the pain, just Do No Harm to your future patient!” I will never forget those words by one of the silent mentors.

Fortunately, I had never personally faced the death of a loved one until this experience. When I received the body of my Silent Mentor, I treated her with the utmost care, as if she were my own family. Cleaning and preparing her for preservation felt deeply personal. The coffining session was particularly unforgettable; we were the last people to see her, not her biological family. I felt great sorrow for her husband, the man who clearly loved her so dearly. Tears filled my eyes as I watched his, a moment I will never forget. Though I’ve often been described as cold-hearted due to my high threshold for tears, I couldn’t hold back the emotion during the closing ceremony. As the video was shown, memories from the one-week program flooded back, and tears rolled down my cheeks.

Words cannot fully express my gratitude to everyone involved in this program. At the crematorium, I knew her husband was still struggling to come to terms with his loss. My hope is that the cherished memories they shared will remain with him, and that he will be blessed with peace, health, and strength in the future.

The Silent Mentor Program has changed me in ways I never thought it would. The lessons our silent mentors have imparted to us go far beyond textbooks. A simple “thank you” cannot convey the depth of my gratitude. I promise to carry our mentor’s legacy with me on my journey to becoming a good doctor. Firstly, I would like to thank the organisers of the Silent Mentor Program for organizing such a meaningful program that can benefit a lot of people. Through the workshops I’ve attended, I was able to gain hands-on experience for some procedures for the first time in my medical journey on a real patient. It is especially beneficial as we could rarely get opportunities to perform emergency procedures like intubation in a real patient if we are not experienced enough to do so. In addition, I am interested in surgery and hence getting to know more about the anatomy with a direct and actual view was eye-opening and helpful for me.

Other than the technical part of this program, I also learned how noble the act of donating bodies is from our silent mentors. I am truly inspired, and I am deeply thankful and grateful for their contributions. From receiving the body, cleaning and preparing the body every morning and evening, until the wrapping up, coffining and sending off ceremony, we are always with our mentor. I would say it is unique experience for myself, I felt honored to be able to do that, and I will always remember her as our mentor. Though it was quite tiring, I am happy to have participated in this program and be able to learn so much from the mentors. Not only the skills, technique or knowledge, but also the humanity. I will try my best to improve myself and be an excellent and professional medical personnel in the future. Thank you.

The Silent Mentor Workshop was certainly an eye-opening experience for me. Going into the workshop, I aimed to enhance my surgical and procedural skills, but it taught me more than that. It taught me the importance of being empathetic in every patient communication I encounter because at the end of the day, it may just be a 10 mins interview or consult for doctors, but each person has a story, has their own aspirations and dreams they wish to fulfil and have loved ones rooting for them to get better. This was truly enhanced by attending the home visit where I learnt my mentor’s life story, his likes and dislikes and his life virtues. Hence, subsequently during each silent mentor session whether it be at cleaning his body at 7am or practicing suturing later in the day, I am reminded that I am working on someone noble who gave up his body for the betterment of the medical field, and that itself motivated me to do better.

The "Silent Mentor Program" has been a profoundly moving and invaluable experience. I am deeply grateful to Mr. Steve for his selfless decision to donate his body to medical education, allowing us to learn critical skills such as suturing, intubation, central venous catheterization, and more. This opportunity has significantly enhanced my preparedness for housemanship, equipping me with essential competencies to better serve my future patients. Beyond technical knowledge, this program has instilled a profound sense of empathy and respect for the silent mentors who continue to teach us even after their passing. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Steve, his family for their noble act, and to the dedicated specialists and doctors who guided and supervised us throughout this journey. I hope the program continues to flourish, shaping compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals for generations to come.

39th Silent Mentor Workshop • 10-15 Dec 2024

The Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most transformative experiences in my medical school journey thus far. Through this program, I have been challenged to think deeply about the values that define a good doctor- empathy, respect, and gratitude, and how these are as critical as technical skills in the practice of medicine.

When I first joined the program, I was struck by the bravery of our Silent Mentors. The decision to donate one’s body for medical education is an act of immense courage and selflessness. It is not only their choice but also a decision supported by their families, who honour their loved ones’ final wishes. This realization left me humbled and inspired, as it demonstrated a great faith in the future of medicine and in us, the students who benefit from this gift.

During the workshop, I was initially focused on acquiring the technical skills that come with hands-on practice. However, as the days passed, I began to understand that the lessons extended far beyond the physical aspects of medicine. Each incision I made reminded me of the privilege I had been given, and each procedure became an opportunity to reflect on the humanity of the person who had offered their body for my education.

What makes the Silent Mentor Program unique is the emphasis on understanding our mentors as individuals. We learned about their lives, their stories, and their families. This personal connection transformed how I approached each session. I was not simply working with a body; I was learning from a person who had once lived a full life, with dreams, struggles, and loved ones. This knowledge compelled me to treat them with the utmost care and respect.

There were moments during the sessions when I struggled. Mistakes are an inevitable part of learning, but in those moments, I found myself reflecting on the silent understanding of our mentors. In their stillness, I heard a voice saying, “It’s okay. This is your chance to learn and grow.” Their silent encouragement became a source of strength, reminding me to persevere and to approach every attempt with humility and determination.
One of the most profound moments of the program was the process of reassembling the body after each session. This act required great attention to detail, but it was more than a technical task. It was an opportunity to honour the gift we had received. By treating our mentors with the utmost dignity, we acknowledged their sacrifice and expressed our gratitude in a tangible way.

To the families of our Silent Mentors, I extend my deepest thanks. Your loved ones have left a legacy, not only in the medical knowledge they have imparted but also in the values they have instilled in us. Their selflessness and your support have taught us lessons that no textbook or lecture could ever provide.

Through this program, I have learned that medicine is not just about diagnosing diseases or performing procedures; it is about understanding and honouring the humanity of the people we serve. It shaped the kind of doctor I aspire to be. It has taught me that empathy and respect are not optional, they are essential. It has reminded me of the privilege and responsibility of being a doctor, and it has shown me the depth of connection that exists between those who teach and those who learn. I will carry these lessons with me throughout my career, striving to embody the values of compassion and gratitude that my Silent Mentors have so graciously imparted.

Based on the silent mentor last week, I think that this program has taught me a lot about humanity. This is due to learning about the silent mentor’s life and their loved ones' view of them. Most of them also are very selfless people who like to give rather than receiving. This has helped me to reflect on myself about being a better person. Being involved from the home visit to preparation to confining, I felt that he is already one of my loved one as well. It really makes me sad when they started to screw the coffin. In conclusion, this is a really beneficial program before we started our career as a doctor.

The Silent Mentor Workshop has been an enlightening journey, deeply transformative both spiritually and intellectually. It has taught me the true essence of empathy and humanity, reshaping my perspective on the role of compassion in medicine. Engaging with the Silent Mentors and their stories reminded me of the profound trust they placed in us and the responsibility we bear as future doctors. This experience has strengthened my commitment to practicing medicine with humility and care. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and for the teamwork that made it possible. May we honour the Silent Mentors through our actions and values.

Even before I entered medical school, the UM Silent Mentor Programme had always been on my bucket list for its unique learning experience. Now, having participated in it, I can say that it has not only deepened my understanding of the human anatomy but, more importantly, instilled in me the values of humanity and compassion in medicine—lessons I have learned from both my Silent Mentor and his family.

At first glance, some activities in the programme might seem mundane, but those who have experienced them would definitely attest to the vital purpose each activity serves. From the house visits, I have understood my silent mentor’s life through heartfelt stories shared by his family and friends. This understanding nurtured a deep respect that compels me to preserve his dignity during every procedure we carry out on his body.

During the initiation ceremony, I was overwhelmed by the emotions expressed by family members when they took a final glance at their deceased ones. Witnessing their grief gave me a glimpse of the pain of losing a loved one, fostering a sense of empathy I will carry with me for my future patients.

Finally, during the closing ceremony, as I escorted his casket out of the faculty, tears flowed freely as I look back on the days I have shared with my silent mentor and his family. It is still surprising to me how we started as a stranger to this family and now has ended up as someone who shares their grief and finds peace and solace together. That moment, and the entire experience, will remain one of the most meaningful and cherished memories of my medical school journey.

39th Silent Mentor Workshop • 10-15 Dec 2024

As a final-year medical student at the University of Malaya, the Silent Mentor Workshop has been one of the most transformative experiences in my journey. My Silent Mentors—Mr. Steve and three other selfless individuals—have taught me invaluable lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.

During the workshop, I made mistakes on Mr. Steve during procedures. Each time, his silence felt like quiet encouragement, urging me to acknowledge my errors, learn from them, and strive to do better. This profound act of patience and generosity reminded me of the importance of humility and accountability—qualities that I will carry with me into my future practice.
In just one week, I developed an unexpected connection with Mr. Steve and my other Silent Mentors. Despite never knowing them in life, I could feel the immense kindness and courage behind their selfless decision to donate their bodies for our learning. Their noble sacrifice made me reflect deeply on what it means to contribute to the greater good and the lasting impact of such an extraordinary act.

This workshop was not merely about acquiring technical skills. It was a poignant reminder that every patient I meet is more than a diagnosis—they are individuals with lives, stories, and families deserving of empathy and respect. It reinforced my responsibility as a doctor to heal, comfort, and honour the humanity of every patient I encounter.

Mr. Steve and the other Silent Mentors imparted these lessons not through words, but through their final, silent act of kindness. Their silence taught me to look beyond the clinical and to embrace the human side of medicine.

To Mr. Steve, my other Silent Mentors, and their families: I am profoundly grateful for your trust and sacrifice. Your legacy will forever guide me to practice medicine with compassion, humility, and respect for the human spirit.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an incredibly humbling and transformative experience. I am deeply grateful and privileged for the opportunity to enhance my medical training by practicing surgical skills on real human bodies.

Beyond the technical skills, this program taught me profound lessons about empathy and the human side of medicine. It reminded me to honour and appreciate the sacrifices made by our silent mentors, who selflessly donated their bodies for the advancement of medical education and research. Their generosity is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry as healthcare professionals.

This experience has inspired me to approach my journey in medicine with greater humility, gratitude, and compassion.

“I remember him smiling, perhaps a little more than when I once met him”, the Silent Mentor Program has been a week of humility. It’s a place where lessons are taught without a word spoken, warmth is felt on a cold body and life is understood with death. The silent mentor program is not so much of enhancing our skills as healthcare providers so much so as it’s to make sure we don’t take the human out of medicine.

Looking back, perhaps the details that we once dreaded as unnecessary eventually bore fruits of empathy and compassion. I recall tears dropping, not because of the passing of our mentor, but perhaps the words and lessons he taught us, the care that his family gave us despite being in grieve themselves. I’ll definitely cherish the memories and lessons that I’ve gotten.

39th Silent Mentor Workshop • 10-15 Dec 2024

Participating in the 39th Silent Mentor Workshop has been an incredibly humbling and transformative experience. Under the guidance of our Silent Mentor, Mr. Chang, I had the opportunity to practice and refine critical medical procedures, including chest tube insertion, suturing, urinary catheter insertion for females, direct laryngoscopy, CVL insertion, and interosseous access. These technical skills are invaluable in shaping me into a more competent future doctor, but the workshop went far beyond technicalities.

This experience taught me about the profound humanity in medicine. Witnessing Mr. Chang’s selfless gift and the unwavering support of his family reminded me of the incredible sacrifices people make to advance medical education. It was a poignant reminder that behind every medical procedure lies a patient with dignity, a story, and loved ones.

The Silent Mentor Program has shown me that medicine is not just about treating diseases but about treating people with compassion and respect. Mr. Chang’s final gift was not just his body for us to learn from, but also a lasting lesson in empathy, humility, and the essence of being a doctor.

As I move forward in my career, I will carry the memory of this workshop and strive to honor Mr. Chang’s legacy by practicing medicine with compassion, empathy, and humanity.

39th Silent Mentor Workshop • 10-15 Dec 2024

One of the most memorable aspects of the Silent Mentor Program was the home visit, which allowed me to see my mentor as more than just a body for clinical practice. During the visit, I learned about my mentor's life, aspirations, the loved ones he left behind, and the precious memories they shared. Through conversations with his family members, I learned that he was a remarkably selfless individual, offering free tuition to students facing financial difficulties. This act of generosity mirrored his final gift to us—his body for medical education. This personal connection instilled in me a sense of respect and gratitude, reminding me to treat every mentor with the same care and reverence as a living patient. Each day, as I cleansed the bodies and practiced my clinical skills, I approached the mentors with a renewed sense of responsibility and humility.

However, the program was not without its challenges. The daily routines of dealing with the stench of the bodies, waking up early and staying late for cleaning on top of attending clinical commitments from 8 to 5 were physically demanding. To cope with this, I constantly reminded myself of the unique opportunity I was given to learn from the mentors. One procedure that particularly stood out to me was the intraosseous line insertion, a procedure I had never witnessed before. Yet, I was given the opportunity to perform it on one of the mentors, which I regard as the highlight of my experience.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a profoundly impactful experience in my medical education. This experience has not only improved my clinical skills but also deepened my understanding of the importance of empathy and respect in patient care.

In my journey as a medical student in UM, few experiences have impacted me as profoundly as participating in this Silent Mentor program. This program, centred around the life and generosity of Mr. Chang, was not just a week of technical learning but also a deep lesson in empathy, humility, and gratitude.

Meeting Mr. Chang's family at the start of the program was an important moment. They shared glimpses of his life, mostly his kindness, dedication, and decision to donate his body to medical education. This act of selflessness highlighted the essence of being a teacher, which Mr. Chang has always been. For us as students, this was not merely a cadaver to learn from but a person who had lived, loved, and left a legacy.

Throughout the week, we were entrusted with caring for Mr. Chang’s body. It was a rare privilege to learn in such an intimate and practical manner, to improve our competence as future doctors. Beyond the practical skills, what stood out was the emotional connection to the experience. Practising procedures on his body was humbling, as it reminded me that our education is not solely for ourselves but for the patients we will one day serve.

At the end of the program, I unfortunately fell sick and could not be there for the closing to pay my last respects. To Mr. Chang and his family, I hope they know that I am forever grateful. Their sacrifice has not only enriched my medical knowledge but also shaped my understanding of what it means to be a compassionate doctor. This experience will remain a core memory of my journey in medicine, reminding me to approach every patient with the same reverence and gratitude.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply transformative experience. Through this journey, I gained not only confidence in performing procedures but also a profound understanding of the importance of seeing patients as human beings—people with stories, values, and lives that extend far beyond the confines of a hospital bed.

The home visit was a pivotal moment for me. Learning about the life my Silent Mentor led, the values he upheld, and the kindness he embodied left a lasting impression. It was not merely his selfless act of donation that inspired me, but the way he lived his life—a life of purpose and generosity that I aspire to emulate. Despite having volunteered in this program before, this time felt different. The daily ritual of caring for our mentors—cleaning them each morning and preparing them for their final journey—was an experience that went beyond the technical. It became deeply personal. By the time we reached the coffining session, I felt as though I was bidding farewell to someone I truly knew, someone whose impact on my growth as a student and as a person was immeasurable.

To my Silent Mentor and his family, I am profoundly grateful. Your selflessness has not only given me the confidence to hone my skills but also taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, humility, and the kind of person I hope to become. Thank you for this noble act, for offering such a precious gift that continues to inspire far beyond the boundaries of the program.

I've always heard the previous participants of the Silent Mentor Program reiterate with reverence about the profound impact and invaluable lessons imparted by their mentors. However, it wasn't until I personally participated in SMP that I truly grasped the depth of these experiences and the profound reflections it inspired.

The home visit was an important encounter. Through the thoughtful and heartfelt sharing by Mr. Chang's family members, we caught a glimpse of Mr. Chang's life, his character and values, and the changes he brought to those around him through his acts of kindness.  We got to know our mentor as a person, the full life he led and the making of the selfless decision to donate his body for medical education.

Perhaps, the one particular detail that left an indelible mark on me was the serene smile that graced Mr. Chang's face. I was initially afraid to make the incision, but even in his passing, my mentor had such a reassuring presence, encouraging me to not be afraid to make mistakes and to try and try again. The daily ritual of caring for our mentor instilled in us a profound sense of responsibility. Witnessing his family's unwavering care for us, despite their own grief, was a humbling experience.

Although the Silent Mentor Program only for a week, it left a lasting and profound impact on me, reminding me to always be compassionate and kind to the patients I meet.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Workshop as a medical student has been a deeply transformative experience. The workshop provided me with the unique opportunity to practice essential clinical skills—such as chest tube insertion, central venous line placement, and intubation—on real human bodies donated for medical education. These hands-on experiences helped me build technical confidence while reinforcing the intricate connection between anatomical structures. Each procedure felt like a profound dialogue with the human body, teaching me not just about anatomy, but also about precision, care, and the responsibility of handling another person’s body.

The most powerful aspect of this workshop, however, was the recognition of the selflessness of the donors. These individuals, through their decision to donate their bodies, gave me a gift that cannot be overstated. They allowed me to learn in ways that textbooks or simulations could never replicate, and their donation will continue to impact countless future medical professionals. I felt an immense sense of gratitude, knowing that their legacy lives on in the knowledge and skills we gain from their generosity. I am more than grateful to have the opportunity to learn from our silent mentors. Their sacrifices made my life different.

The first encounter with the Silent Mentor was a moment that left a lasting impression. We stood in a circle, silently observing the body before us. The room was calm, the atmosphere respectful with a sense of reverence. It was an individual’s final act of giving that allowed us to refine our skills and deepen our understanding of human anatomy. This body was not merely a tool for learning; it was a person who had once lived, loved, and contributed to the world in ways we would never know.

Silent mentor program allows us to engage in hands-on learning in a deeply personal and respectful way. Participating in this program has expanded my understanding of anatomy as well as reinforced the ethical principles that will guide my medical career.

39th Silent Mentor Workshop • 10-15 Dec 2024

I have been volunteering for the Silent Mentor Program since Year 2 and had already gained so much knowledge and experience from it. This year, I am blessed and grateful to be able to take part as a participant and involve myself in taking care of my Silent Mentor. Right from the start, I was already interested to know more about my Silent Mentor when we made our way to Kota Tinggi, Johor to meet the family members. The initial encounter was awkward, but as time passed, I gathered enough courage to interact with the family members. Despite being a short meeting, it signified the start of a connection between the Silent Mentor and all of us.

The hands-on and anatomy sessions prepared were enriching and acted as a good platform for early exposure for all doctors and medical students. However, beyond that lies encounters and experiences that I do not get in medical school and textbooks. It is not about knowing the disease or mastering the procedures but highlights a person’s life journey. It tells us the importance of understanding a person’s social circumstances, such as his origin, culture, lifestyle, work and the relationship with his or her family. This is part and parcel of understanding our patient as a person, and not merely the associated diseases.

Every time I met and cleaned my Silent Mentor, I thanked him silently, until the very last moment I saw him during the funeral ceremony. It was a touching moment, and I often reminded myself I was lucky that during my lifetime, I was able to meet a selfless person who dedicated his own body for the benefit of medical education. This is an opportunity that should never be taken for granted and every bit of experience gained is a reminder of this act of generosity. The Silent Mentor program has taught me the essence of a human life, and to treat every person with respect and in a holistic manner.

Studying medicine often feels like a journey of mastering how to fix bodies — learning the science of treating diseases and perfecting clinical skills. However, joining the 39th Silent Mentor Workshop offered me a new perspective, one that goes beyond the technical aspects of medicine.

Through this program, I had the privilege of learning not only from the Silent Mentor’s body but also about their life—their stories, the impact they had on others, and how deeply they are missed by their loved ones. It reminded me that every patient is much more than a diagnosis or a condition; they are someone’s parent, friend, or partner, with a life full of meaning.

This experience brought a human touch to my understanding of what it means to be a doctor. It’s not just about treating diseases but also about respecting and honoring the person behind the illness. The Silent Mentors taught me compassion, humility, and the importance of seeing patients as individuals, not just cases.

This lesson has reshaped how I approach medicine, reminding me to balance science with empathy and to always remember the human stories behind the medical journey.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have been given the opportunity to participate in this Silent Mentor program. Joining the program as both a volunteer and a participant has given me a unique perspective and an entirely different feeling.

As a participant, I had the privilege of getting to know my Silent Mentor for who he truly was, appreciating his willpower and the way he lived his life. I began learning not just on the day of the workshop but from the very first moment I got to know him in Johor Bahru. I was deeply moved by how selfless and loving he was in taking care of his family. The responsibility he had to provide for his family’s happiness reminded me of my own father.

I will always remember his life motto and treasure the lessons it has taught me. This Silent Mentor program has inspired me to become a healer with greater compassion and empathy. I am immensely grateful to everyone who made this program possible.

This program provided me with a rare opportunity to learn necessary skills as a doctor. Not only did it give me a sense of responsibility during the program as we were instructed to clean, suture and take care of our silent mentors after every workshop, I experienced various emotions that I hadn’t thought I had when dealing with other patients. I had a profound understanding on what loss meant for the family members and loved ones and it made me realize the silent mentors’ contribution for the greater good of science and medical education. I am eternally grateful of the wordless wisdom that our silent mentors have passed to us in the form of knowledge, compassion and wisdom. I promise to carry on their teachings onto other patients that I encounter, being reminded that we treat patients, and not the disease solely.

This journey has been transformative, teaching me not only technical skills but also the profound value of empathy and respect in medicine. While emotionally challenging at times, it was a powerful reminder of humanity at the heart of my future profession.

I am deeply moved by the selfless sacrifice of Mr. Cheong, our silent mentor, who gave us the opportunity to learn and grow by performing procedures like CVL insertion, chest tube placement, and laryngoscopy. His gift serves as a lasting inspiration, motivating me to uphold the trust and generosity of those who make such sacrifices.

I am also grateful to the volunteer lecturers whose dedication to teaching enriched this experience, and to my teammates who thoughtfully prepared gifts and gratitude cards for the families.

The chance to perform a solo piece during the closing session was especially meaningful. It allowed me to honor and thank our silent mentors in a deep personal way, leaving me with a renewed sense of gratitude and commitment to this path.

I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to participate in the 39th SMP. This experience not only enhanced my clinical skills but has also served as a reminder to me that every life on earth is precious and meaningful.

The past few days of silent mentor workshops went by in a blur. We were busy, but we were content, our hearts were full. Having to clean Mr Cheong’s body every morning and night, honestly, at the beginning, it felt like a chore, however as time went by, my true feelings surfaced. I felt honored, I felt proud of Mr Cheong as our silent mentor. I tried my best to make sure that he is neat and clean for the day, hoping that we can fulfill his last wishes to the utmost best.

Mr Cheong struck me as someone who is kind hearted, strong and humble. His selfless decision to donate his body as a silent mentor has made a great impact on many lives of others. His contribution goes beyond words, not only is he a teacher, he is also a healer and a guide for generations of medical professionals to serve their countless patients. I sincerely hope that Mr Cheong will rest in peace. As for the family members, even though we might not have the chance to meet again, I hope that they are well and have a good life ahead of them.

Participating in Silent Mentor Program as a medical student was an enriching experience. Being able to brush up on suturing and learning new skills like intubation, CVL insertion etc helped me build confidence in my surgical skills. I am eternally grateful to my mentor and her family members for giving me this opportunity, to get close with them, to connect with my mentor by learning about her decorated life and to be able to learn from her. This is an experience that I will never forget.

Personally, joining the Silent Mentor Program has been a truly enriching experience. Initially, it was a bit intimidating but the program quickly proved to be both rewarding and insightful. All mentors who generously donate their bodies for educational purposes have taught me the importance of respect and gratitude in medical training.

The program also emphasized the ethical side of medicine, reminding me of the importance of compassion and respect in patient care. Apart from that, the hands on approach has deepened my understanding of anatomy far beyond what textbooks can offer. Additionally, collaborating with peers throughout the programme also has fostered a strong sense of community and shared purpose. Overall, the Silent Mentor Program has profoundly impacted my perspective on medical education. It’s been a valuable experience that I’m excited to carry forward into my future career in medicine.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Workshop has been an incredibly transformative experience for me. It deepened my understanding of the profound connection between medicine, empathy, and humanity. The opportunity to learn from our Silent Mentors not only enhanced my technical skills but also instilled in me a greater sense of compassion, which I believe is essential in the medical field. I am deeply grateful for this experience and will carry these lessons with me throughout my medical career.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program at University Malaya has been a transformative experience that extended beyond acquiring technical skills and medical knowledge. While learning about human anatomy and medical procedures was a crucial aspect of the program, the profound lessons I gained about sacrifice, kindness, and personal growth were equally impactful. This Silent Mentor Program allowed me to appreciate the incredible generosity and selflessness of those who chose to donate their bodies to science. These individuals, through their act of giving, provided us with an invaluable educational resource that went far beyond textbooks and lectures. Their sacrifice was a powerful reminder of the depth of human kindness and the importance of giving without expectation.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program with Mr. Lee Hock Ban as our body donor has been a deeply impactful experience. This program allows us to practice essential medical procedures like inserting chest tube and central venous lines on a real human body, providing a practical learning experience that textbooks alone can't offer. Mr. Lee’s donation has given us the chance to refine our technical skills and better understand human anatomy in a hands-on way, which is crucial for our development as future doctors.

Working with Mr. Lee's body has emphasized the importance of precision and care inperforming medical procedures. Each task required meticulous attention to detail andadherence to established techniques, reinforcing how critical these skills are in real-lifemedical situations. This practical experience has helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, making us more confident and capable in our clinical skills.

Additionally, the Silent Mentor Program has highlighted the ethical aspects of medical practice. It’s clear that Mr. Lee’s donation is a significant gift, and this experience has deepened our appreciation for the respect and dignity that must be afforded to both donors and patients. This has reinforced our commitment to treating every patient with the utmost respect and compassion, acknowledging their humanity and the trust they place in us.

In summary, the Silent Mentor Program has been a crucial part of our medical training. It has equipped us with important skills and reinforced our ethical responsibilities as future doctors. We are grateful for Mr. Lee Hock Ban’s contribution and will carry the lessons learned into our future medical careers with a deep sense of responsibility and respect.

Throughout these few days of participating in the Silent Mentor Workshop, I learnt a lot of medical knowledge and was able to apply the knowledge that I learnt and practice the procedural skills on our mentors. I am grateful for this precious opportunity to involve myself in this wonderful and meaningful workshop.

Their selfless love and sacrifice are something that I will cherish from the bottom of my heart throughout my journey as a medical doctor as well as for the rest of my life. “Turning a loss into a gift”, is the important life lesson that will deeply be engraved on my mind, reminding me their sacrifice and wishes which is us to become a compassionate and empathetic doctor. What a great, meaningful way to end my medical school life and I feel happy about it.

Very few people in this world could tolerate fighting a disease, but fewer were those who were selfless, able to round up their decision to donate their bodies for a greater cause. Our mentors, I would say, were among the very few who understood the significance of the learning experience through this program. We might not be able to tell them how much it means to us, but we hope the family members could bear witness of how great of a deal these opportunities mean to us. Along with the practical skills we gained, we also learned to be more compassionate and empathetic to our mentors or patients.

Our prayers of gratitude would echo forever, among the one-minute-of-silence that we did each time before our lessons started. Above anything else, we would like to give our deepest appreciation to our mentor and his family members, along with our trainers and SMP team. Thank you so much.

Taking part in the Silent Mentor program has been an eye-opening experience that goes beyond the conventional education I’ve received in medical school. From the very beginning, I was struck by the profound generosity of the individuals who chose to donate their bodies for our learning.

Every moment spent in the program reinforced the idea that being a doctor is not just about mastering medical techniques, but about understanding and honoring the lives of those we care for. The practical skills we developed were undeniably important, but equally significant was the reminder that behind every procedure lies a human story—one of sacrifice, trust, and dignity. The mentors, though silent, imparted lessons that words could never convey.

This experience has reminded me that medicine is as much about human connection as it is about science. The Silent Mentor program has taught me to approach each patient with not only the intent to heal but with a profound sense of respect for the life they have lived. As I continue my journey to becoming a doctor, I will carry these lessons with me, always striving to treat my future patients with the compassion and respect they deserve. The gratitude I feel towards our mentors and their families is immeasurable, and their contribution to my education will forever inspire me to practice medicine with both skill and heart.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the 38th Silent Mentor Workshop before the end of my medical school. Being part of this team is a true privilege, as this program has offered countless meaningful experiences. From the home visit to the sending-off ceremony, I have gained invaluable lessons—not only in academics but also in life.

It was incredibly selfless for our mentors to decide to turn a loss into a gift by joining our program, with the hope of helping us to learn. I was deeply moved when one of our master doctor representatives shared that they had the opportunity to perform a newly introduced surgery in Malaysia on our mentors, marking a significant new milestone. “It is like a seed planted, which we don’t know how big it will grow.” said the master doctor.  I also appreciated the support and understanding from the mentors’ families, which added profound meaning to the program. Now, the mentors are not only in their loved ones’ memories but in a broader way as well. “Death is not the end. They are still with us, as long as we don’t forget them.” shared one of the mentors’ family members.

I believe thousands of words could not express my gratitude, but I still want to say thank you to all the Silent Mentors.

Turn A Loss To A Gift - The perfect words to describe the Silent Mentor Program because our mentors have gifted us with a learning experience which I will treasure forever. Besides gaining useful knowledge through this program, I was able to witness the last rites that was performed for each mentor, and I felt deeply touched and emotional. At that time, the only thing I could think of was how brave our mentors are. This program reminded me of the reason I chose to become a doctor. Our mentors’ contribution has allowed me to develop skills, confidence, and motivation to keep going and give back to the society. It was a blessing to be able to join the Silent Mentor Program. Before joining the program, from what I’ve heard about it, I knew that I would be given opportunities to perform simple surgical procedures on the mentors but what I got at the end of the day was beyond practical skills and knowledge. I’ve learnt the heart of gratitude and respect through the way we treat the mentors during the whole program, and such is the way we should treat every other patient we meet in the future. I am grateful to all the Silent Mentors for the generous sacrifice they’ve invested into our lives so that we can be skillful and responsible doctors in the future, to serve the community well.

As a young medic immersed in the profound journey of understanding human anatomy through the invaluable gift of our mentor’s sacrifice, I find myself enveloped in waves of gratitude and reflection. This program transcends mere education; it's a testament to the ultimate act of generosity and trust. Each time silence filled the air during our 1-minute prayer paying respect to our mentor, the meaning behind their devotion and dedication gets louder. Through their altruism, every incision that pierced through their skin, they continue to educate and inspire future generations of healers. The solemnity of this experience humbles me, instilling a great sense of responsibility and reverence for all my patients, sick or well. Memories of this unparalleled experience will be forever etched in our hearts.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an incredibly profound experience for me in ways I never imagined. I was a volunteer for the previous Silent Mentor Program, I’m fortunate enough to join this program for the third time, except that this time I joined as a participant.

Being a participant was definitely a huge difference from being a volunteer. Reason being participants are required to take charge of their Silent Mentor from the beginning such as receiving and preserving mentor’s body until the end with coffining and sending off ceremony. On the other hand, volunteers will only need to attend the program on certain dates.

Every morning, as I approached the mentor's body to clean it, I was overwhelmed by a mix of emotions—respect, humility, and a profound sense of connection. Despite their silence, I felt as though the mentors were speaking to me, teaching me important lessons about life, compassion, and the fragility of existence. Cleaning the mentor's body became more than just a task. It was a sacred ritual, a way for me to express my gratitude for the invaluable gift they had bestowed upon us. With each gentle tap of cotton gauze, I found myself reflecting on the beauty and dignity of the human form until the last moment. With the increasing number of stiches and bleeds, I felt sad but with a deep sense of respect for her bravery and grace.

But the learning didn't stop there. Through the Silent Mentor Program, I had the opportunity to delve deep into the study of medical procedures and human anatomy, guided by the mentors. But more than just learning about medical procedures, I learned about the importance of empathy, compassion, and gratitude. The mentors taught me that life is a precious gift, one that should never be taken for granted. Their selfless act of donation reminded me of the importance of giving back to others, of making a difference in the lives of those around us.

Life is always full of surprises as it unfolds. It was during the closing ceremony only then I found out Madam Tang was my college classmate’s grandmother. After graduating from college, I lost contact with my classmate for few years due to different course and university enrolment. I was relieved that we both still recognized each other undoubtedly, and she was glad that my team and I were handling her grandmother’s body. I believed this is fate that has brought us back together where our friendship was reconnected. We cherished our time in Xiao En Memorial Park.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply humbling and enriching experience. It has reminded me of the uncertainty and fate of life, and the importance of cherishing every moment we have with our loved ones. I am eternally grateful to the mentors for their generosity and their invaluable teachings, and I will carry their lessons with me always.

Looking back for the past 1 week the Silent Mentor Program had been held, I can’t help but be grateful to had been given the opportunity to participate. It all begins with the home visit to our mentor, Madam Tang Kooi Ying’s family home in Kemayan, Pahang, it was a long journey deep into the outskirt of Pahang. There, we greeted the family members and had a talk with them about the life of our mentor, the hardships, and fond memories they had of her. It helps us connect with our mentor to know her as a person rather than a medical issue to solve. During the entire week when the program was held, we prepare our mentor every morning and evening for her lesson to the participants. The routine has thought me a lot about the respect we need to show them for their selfless sacrifice to further medical knowledge. When it was our turn for the teaching session, I had learnt a lot of new skills such as intubation and chest tube insertion which will help me to become a safe doctor in the future. During the last day of the program, we send off our mentor to Xiao En crematorium in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan and bid farewell to our beloved mentor who had taught us a lot even in their silence. Overall, this program had sharpened my medical skills as well as my empathy towards my patients, to treat them with respect and gratitude.

Silent Mentor is a program I have been wanting to get my turn of participation since the day I got to know about it. I was always fascinated by the beauty of human anatomy which is one of the main reasons for taking on this course. I was always fascinated by the task of performing live saving procedures. However, as a medical student we are required to learn certain non-fatal procedures. Performing invasive procedures on a live patient needs knowledge and skills so that we will not make patients’ condition worse. This program has given a wonderful opportunity to practice procedures on our mentor. Apart from gaining medical knowledge, Silent Mentor has emphasised on humanity and compassion. Activities such as home visit and gratitude ceremony has shown me the importance of showing compassion. Family members have been supportive since first day too, even when they had to delay their final rituals and await for a closure. This selfless act by our mentor has inspired me to serve everyone to the best of my abilities.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an incredibly profound and enriching experience that has significantly deepened my understanding and appreciation of the medical field. Through this program, I had the unique opportunity to hone my practical surgical skills, including intubation, chest tube insertion, and bladder drainage, under the guidance of Silent Mentors who generously donated their bodies for medical education. This selfless act of contribution has not only provided me with invaluable hands-on experience but has also instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility.

I am immensely touched and inspired by the Silent Mentors' altruism. Their silent teachings remind us of the importance of empathy, respect, and compassion in medicine—qualities that are crucial for any healthcare professional. These mentors, in their silence, have taught me more than just technical skills; they have imparted lessons on the sanctity of life, the importance of patient care, and the profound impact a doctor can have on the lives of individuals and their families.

Reflecting on this experience, I am more committed than ever to approach my future medical career with a heightened sense of duty, empathy, and respect for the patients I will serve. The Silent Mentor Program has truly been a cornerstone in my medical education, shaping me not just into a more skilled practitioner, but into a more compassionate and thoughtful human being. Silent Mentor Program has been an eye opener for me. Before joining, I often questioned why my colleagues would say that they feel somewhat attached to their mentors. With time, I understood why. It is unfortunate that we meet our mentors when they are no longer with us, but at the same time, the time spent together in moments of silence was very meaningful. For them to donate their body for our benefit took a lot of courage and bravery. Having to take care of our mentors throughout the entire week made me realize that empathy goes a long way. They may not be with us spiritually, but we still must respect them. It was no doubt that we should use that opportunity to its fullest capacity, and I think we managed to achieve it. With the workshops provided for us, personally I think that I benefited a lot from the workshop in brushing up my skills that before this was only learned theoretically. It gave me more confidence throughout the whole process even if it was just a practical session. All in all, it was a worthwhile experience, and I will forever remember this. Thank you to all the mentors and their family for this chance.

However, what I was not prepared for was how it has impacted me emotionally also. Although I have never met my mentor Mr Ong, I felt as if he was my own grandfather and was very sad to see him go. I have a huge respect to all the mentors as they selflessly offer their bodies for the advancement of medical education.

Witnessing suchenerosity has instilled in me a renewed sense of compassion and empathy towards others, and I believe it has impacted me in such a way that will help me in my future career as a medical doctor.

Joining this program has been a transformative journey that has enriched my personal and professional life in myriad ways. I am very grateful to be given this rare opportunity. My mentor’s last words to us were ‘If patients feel that their doctors care about them, healing is already being administered without prescription’. As I continue this path, I will keep this in mind in my future practice - to be a doctor who can show their care through their actions, even before any medications are given.

When I first joined Silent Mentor Program, I did not really know what to expect. I knew roughly that we would be practicing procedures on donated bodies, and at the same time learn about the gracious individuals that gave their bodies to us, but I did not expect how it would impact me as a person and as a future doctor. Learning about my mentor, Mr Ong Kim San's life and personality through his family allowed me to connect with him as a person, even though we did not have the privilege to meet in life.

When I first saw him on that table, I felt like knew him in some way. I knew that we had to treat him with the respect and care that he deserved, just as we would treat our future patients in front of us. Over the following procedures and program, through bleary tired eyes, I came to relish the quiet time spent with Mr Ong, cleaning him from the previous day's procedures, and looking forward to learning more from that day's workshop. With every incision and stitch, I felt immense gratitude towards Mr Ong, as well as the other 3 mentors who had allowed us this precious opportunity to learn from them. The clinical skills I have gleamed from this program will surely serve me well in my future career and I am blessed to have had the chance to meet these 4 amazing individuals.

No words can repay my thanks and gratitude to our Silent Mentors and their family members, who have been so supportive throughout our journey. I will always remember Mr Ong and the lesson that he taught me about the importance of compassion in medicine.

When I first entered this program, I thought that I will learn about anatomy and clinical skills. It turns out that I gain more than just that. Humanity and empathy are such a big core that were heavily valued in this program. I am so impressed of how much respect that were shown towards the donors and their family through this program. Being a medical professional, we sometimes forgot the human part of our profession and we tend to see our patients as just another disease that needed to be cured or settle. This program made me realised that my perception was far from the truth. Our patients are humans with feelings and families on theirs. For us it might be another fail surgery or procedure but for the families and friends, it’s a loss of their loved one. In this program, I saw how heartbreaking is it for the family members to saw their loved one lie cold on the bed. I hope that this program will ensure that I can deliver a better care to my patients with compassion in the future.

Getting from knowing I was selected for this precious chance of joining the Silent Mentor workshop up until the very last moment coming back to campus from the memorial park, I felt truly blessed and gratitude to have this chance to participate and learn from this Silent Mentor workshop. Before joining this workshop, I thought it would be a great medical workshop, which will benefit me for my medical experience and knowledge. But after these few weeks and went through all the workshop, I felt I might have gained some medical knowledge and experience, but what truly I had rewarded from this workshop is my own experience and my growing as I progress my way towards a medical practitioner. Silent Mentors really let me learn a lot from them, from giving us to do medical procedures and with the wish of “please make mistakes on me but promise me not to make any mistakes when you are a doctor when you are treating a patient” and let us learn on how to be a better doctor in the future. At here, I would again say thanks to all Silent Mentors and doctors, who taught me a lot and let me learned a lot, I will bring this learnings with me throughout my medical career.

Remember joining Silent Mentor Program as a volunteer in my first year. Joining the send-off ceremony. I remembered I literally got teary hearing seniors sang the exact same song. 5 years later, I’m beyond blessed I’m able to join as a participant. The feelings I got, was so different. I always wonder why the seniors were so emotional during the send-off ceremony. Now I know. Being involved as a participant in this program, I’m not only being taught the hands on skills that will be essential during my intern years, also being empathy, and think of their family members while doing any decision. I think this will be my biggest takeaway from this program. I’m extremely proud of my teammates for this batch workshop, as we were all final year students preparing our final exams. Yet, we all pulled off quite nicely. Thanks everyone involved in this workshop. Helping us in and out, relentlessly.

Cultivating humility, empathy and compassion, the Silent Mentor Program is a poignant reminder of the sacred trust bestowed upon myself as a future healthcare professional. Receiving the silent teachings of mentors, I have gained invaluable anatomical knowledge and developed a deeper understanding of the sanctity of life in medicine. The pursuit of medicine is an ongoing journey of dedication, perpetual learning and commitment to healing, both physically as well as emotionally. It is a noble endeavour marked by selflessness, exemplified by the generous donors in this program, which serves as a significant learning milestone for all medical students.

The Silent Mentor Program was an unforgettable workshop. I have benefitted greatly from this unforgettable experience. Not only did it contribute to my accrual of knowledge, it has also renewed my passion for medicine and helping others. For a few of us, it was a test of discipline as well. I’m glad I can say I did my best as a sign of appreciation towards the mentors. Words can't describe how much I appreciate the opportunity that has been given by our Silent Mentors through this program. I've learnt a lot; from medical knowledge to a connection from one human being to another. The empathy, the kindness, the compassion. I've gained all these valuable knowledge and experience within a workshop. I'm glad to able to meet truly kind and selfless people who willingly to contribute to the society even in the afterlife. It's such an eye-opening experience and I believed that learning about my Silent Mentor's life story, I too learn a few things from him; to live my life to the fullest and to spread love and kindness.

I’m truly grateful to be given this once in a lifetime chance to join the Silent Mentor Program as a participant. Before joining, I thought that my only role was to practice my hands on skills, however, as I slowly got involved in this program, I realized that it’s more than just hands on practice. This workshop lets me indulge into the past life of the Silent Mentors and feel the love they have transcended over time and space. Even in a short span of time, a connection is made between us and our Silent Mentor. Every day we will be there to clean our Silent Mentor’s body and learn from him, this has then made a stronger bond between us and our Silent Mentor. From being a total stranger to being a person close to my heart, it was really hard to see the sending off of my Silent Mentor. Words couldn’t describe how thankful I am to my Silent Mentor for his selfless act to donate his body for medical education. After experiencing the Silent Mentor Program, there’s this quietness and peacefulness in me. It’s a feeling that is indescribable. I really enjoyed my week in this program, hopefully this program could be continued for a lifetime so that medical students and even doctors are able to benefit from it! THANK YOU!

At first, being in the Silent Mentor Program, was pondered to be just attending workshops and classes. To get hands on skills. However, after joining SMP, it has made me realised that life is more than just attend classes, or just doing certain things. It has opened me. It has made me realised that life is a journey. Life is not a zero-sum game. Though the mentors, were previously never acquainted to us. However, they were willing to play such a huge role in our learning. This has built my trust and love in humanity. The whole program has been well, to teach me hands on skills and compassion.

The program was an eye-opener for me since it was my first time witnessing different religions sending off ceremony. We also had gotten the opportunity to learn about our mentor and to connect with the family members to convey the mentor’s stories and last wishes as best as we could to everyone. On top of learning about practical skills, one extra thing I had learnt from this program is that everyone can be your teacher if you are willing to learn from them. In this field of work, for healthcare professionals, patients would be our best teachers and even when they have passed away, we were able to still learn so much from them. I am grateful for all the Silent Mentors for their selfless sacrifice. Hopefully by attending this program, it will make me a better doctor in the future with better skills and empathy.

The Silent Mentor Program was something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I knew roughly what it was about and was excited to join and learn some procedures that I have only been able to witness before this. I was surprised that the entire program involved us students from the start till the end, from the day our dear Silent Mentor passed on, to the day we laid him in the casket. It was truly an unforgettable experience that I am very grateful for.

Meeting the SM’s family to get to know more about him was a bittersweet experience for me, knowing we will never meet but nevertheless he had made such an impactful contribution to my journey as a medical student. As the workshop progressed, I learnt a lot from all the Silent Mentors and doctors. We were constantly reminded to respect our mentors and always started with a minute of silence. After the workshop, we were also involved in the sending off ceremony which was extremely emotional. Seeing the family members of our mentors with teary eyes and hearing they’re speeches made me realise as we were gaining so much from this, it was still a big loss for so many people. Yet, they graciously participated and even thanked us for the respect we have shown to their loved ones.

All in all, this was an experience I truly appreciate and has made me grow in many ways. I thank the Silent Mentor team who have successfully organised this event with such detail and professionalism.

I have heard a lot from my friends and seniors that the Silent Mentor Program is a very memorable experience prior to joining one. I started this program with not much expectation. I just wanted to get some hands-on experience with the procedures that will be taught. However, throughout the program, and by the end of the program, the greatest reward that I got from it wasn’t the knowledge nor the procedures that I have done. It was more on emotional reward; the connection with my Silent Mentor whom I haven’t met but felt that I knew him; the humanity and humility lessons that this program taught me to be a better and more compassion doctor in the future.

What impacted me the most was completing the power point slides. At times, the world feels like it’s moving at a snail’s pace; studying, mopping the floor, washing the dishes. Then come times that you enjoy, holidays that pass by in a blink of an eye. But at the end of the day, we all face the one certainty in life, that is, everything that lives will die and all the time we spent will come to an end. How do you put 84 years of someone’s life into 15 slides and if they had the choice, what would they have chosen to present? What would my 15 slides say after I die? We only have this one life and believe it or not, we often forget. Caught up in social media, news or plain contagious gossip that infects our minds and millions of other sources of media that confuse us and ultimately influence how we live our lives. I have found that these thoughts occupy my mind throughout Silent Mentor, I have spent more time away from media to focus on myself and my thoughts, to try and work towards a life that I would be happy to present in 15 slides. Ms Juelie has been incredibly kind to us and from a recent dinner, we learnt that this program has inspired her friends and Ms Juelie herself to pledge to Silent Mentor which reflects on how positive the experience was for her.

It was a busy and hectic week. Our days start as early as 5am and ends at around 11pm. Despite all this, I can’t help but feel tremendously honoured and grateful by the learning opportunities that all of us get to experience, and all of these wouldn’t be possible had we not been blessed with our selfless mentors. We were involved in this program since the very beginning, from meeting the family members to accompanying the mentors for cremation ceremony. We got to know the life stories of our selfless mentors before learning from their body. I feel like these mentors are so selfless and I appreciate them so much for providing the opportunity for us to learn. I would also like to thank Mr. Sia and other volunteers for making this program a reality. The spirit of volunteerism is truly remarkable as the works are hard and none of them are paid for it. Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an enlightening and humbling experience, providing me an insight on the interconnectedness of life, learning, and the profound act of selfless giving even beyond death.

The home visit to learn about the background of my mentor offered a glimpse into the life of an individual who, in their passing, became a silent guide for the medical community. Learning about their personal history, achievements, and the values they held dear fostered a sense of respect and gratitude. The initiation ceremony was a solemn occasion, a moment of acknowledgment and acceptance of the responsibilities that come with the privilege of learning from such a unique form of donation. The workshops, where hands-on learning took place, were both challenging and rewarding. Engaging with the human body in a way that transcends textbooks and digital simulations brought a sense of responsibility and reverence. Each incision and exploration became a dialogue with my Silent Mentor, a respectful collaboration in the pursuit of medical knowledge. The sending-off ceremony marked the end of this transformative journey. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude, a time to honour the Silent Mentors and express appreciation for their selfless contribution to medical education.

The Silent Mentor Program has taught me that learning extends beyond textbooks and classrooms; it encompasses empathy, respect, and a deep understanding of the human experience. It has instilled in me a sense of duty to honour the silent voices that have contributed to my education, and a commitment to approach medicine with both skill and compassion.

Throughout my participation in the Silent Mentor Program, from the initial home visit to the poignant closing ceremony, I have garnered a treasure trove of invaluable life lessons. While mastering various clinical skills—from intricate suturing techniques to the confident insertion of a central venous line—has been pivotal, the most profound insight has been the cultivation of empathy and selflessness.

This program has illuminated the profound notion that one can continue to benefit others even beyond life's passing. Engaging with the families throughout these experiences has underscored the paramount importance of effective communication in the realm of healthcare. The beauty of this journey lies not just in the clinical prowess acquired but in the deeper understanding of human connection and compassion.

I find myself forever indebted to my esteemed teacher, Mr. Koh Kooi Eng, and his family members, alongside the unwavering support of Mr. Sia and the entire silent mentor staff. The bonds formed between my colleagues has added another layer of richness to this beautiful experience. As I reflect on these experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the profound impact this journey has had on both my professional and personal growth.

May these lessons in empathy and selflessness continue to resonate in my approach to patient care and in my interactions with colleagues and families.

In the realm of the Silent Mentor Workshop, the influence of Mr. Koh Hooi Eng has been a guiding force, leaving an indelible mark on my path. His unspoken guidance is a beacon for my journey, and I express eternal gratitude to him and his family.

The decision of Mr. Koh Hooi Eng's family to transform their loss into a gift for the medical profession is a testament to their generosity. From the heartwarming home visit in Klang, their kindness resonated with all of us. Getting to know the intricacies of Mr. Koh's life, I found inspiration in his experiences, each detail leaving a profound impact on me.

The workshop provided a platform to enhance not only my practical skills but also deepen my anatomical knowledge through insightful sessions. This opportunity is an honour and I appreciate the selflessness by Mr. Koh Hooi Eng, shaping not just my skills but my character as well.

As I carry forward the lessons learned from Mr. Koh, his contribution becomes a quiet guide on my medical journey. His legacy, shared through this workshop, becomes a part of my own narrative which reminds me of the noble purpose in the medical profession.

36th Silent Mentor Workshop • 05-10 Dec 2023

First and foremost, I would like to thank the 36th Silent Mentor Workshop for giving me the opportunity to join. It had been the best closure to my medical schooI to be able to participate in a program that I had dreamed of being a part of since the start of my final year. I had learned a lot during this one week in terms of hands-on skills. The program had also been an emotionally and spiritually charged experience.

Humanistic values were the beating heart of the program, attributes that I was thoroughly familiarized with during the invaluable week. We started with visitations of the Silent Mentors’ family members, learning the curves and contours of the imprints that the dead had left on these people—their aspirations, identities, and livelihoods. It was a series of walks down memory lane, an exercise in compassion to lend soulful warmth to the cold bodies that we were about to dissect. Crushing grief was ever present in the conversations with the family members and friends of the dead, but so were love and fondness. These were ultimately the brushes that painted vivid pictures of the mentors and immortalized them in motion, alive. These pictures further served to remind us that the bodies were fellow humans whose veins life and all that pertained to it once had rushed through and thus deserved care and respect.

A lot of things that we learned theoretically were made clearer through the hands-on teaching of the workshop. During it, we were trained to do procedural skills such as chest tube insertion, endotracheal intubation, central line insertion, and suturing on the donated bodies, in addition to the more advanced surgical techniques. The methodical act of threading sutures, closing open wounds, and getting up close and personal to the bodies had helped instil a new level of respect for the dead in me. The program as a whole aimed to cultivate empathy and compassion, as the medical field is often riddled with mines that perpetuate disengagement or desensitisation from one’s humanity due to the inevitable nature of death. It had taught me that people’s life stories do not end with death, and our work not only involves saving the living but also upholding the dignity of the dead.

Near the end of the program, we dressed the Silent Mentors properly and according to their respective religion’s death rites. As I swathed the cold, lifeless bodies in shrouds, I reflected on the ephemerality of life and the kind of legacy I would like to leave behind when death came knocking upon my doorsteps. It was sobering and daunting, but oddly grounding at the same time. It was the highest honour to be a part of the death rites for the mentors and to walk alongside them on that last stretch of journey through life as we paid our final respect to each of them. I did not know these people personally, but the small glimpses into their lives that we had been given were enough to suffuse me with glowing warmth despite the subdued proceedings.

All in all, Silent Mentor helped us to improve our skills and confidence as future holistic doctors who also put heavy emphasis on humanistic values. All these priceless experiences were all due to the kind sacrifices of our Silent Mentors, who donated their bodies willingly and unconditionally for the good of mankind.

36th Silent Mentor Workshop • 05-10 Dec 2023

This one week of participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a profoundly reflective journey on my understanding of life, death, and the intricacies of the human body. The home visit allowed us to have a glimpse into the life of our beloved mentor. We had a better understanding of him as a person, his passion for work and family, and his life motto. Even though we did not have the chance to meet him in person, I would like to express my greatest gratitude to him. He continued to be a great inspiration to us after his passing.

Through the workshops, I learned more about human anatomy and had the chance to perform hands-on procedures like chest tubes, intubation, and suturing procedures on real humans. I truly benefited a lot from this one week. However, in my opinion, the core values of the Silent Mentor Program are to instil humanity among us medical students and remind us to always treat every patient professionally. These values were not taught by any kind of textbook, yet I believe they will always remain an integral part of my medical journey.

I thought I will never have the chance to join Silent Mentor since I was already in PRINT posting. But God knows better where He allows me to experience it before I sign out as a medical student. I’ve heard a lot about this program in term of how hectic it was, but honestly it wasn’t that bad. I enjoyed every activity in this program from the beginning which was the home visit until the end when we went to the cemetery. I didn’t just learn about medical procedures and anatomy from the mentors, but I also gained a lot of impactful exposure regarding good things that they did when they were still alive. Last but not least, to know who they were as a living human being while looking at their selfless dead body make me realize that life is short and unpredictable. It makes me appreciate people and my life more. Thank you mentors and organizers.

I was in a meditation retreat when I was told that my mentor had only a few days left. In my belief, saying a prayer to someone with a cultivated mind would yield higher merits. And that was what I did for the last 2 days before her passing.

Later on, I felt gratified by the way her family welcomed me for lunch, talked to me, and for a family photo at Xiao En memorial park. All of them were very touched by the presentation given earlier that morning. In my mind, I was thinking “If they could spend hours traveling from Penang twice for the ceremonies, equally, I would do the same for my presentation, in honour of them”.

I have learnt the spiritual fulfilment in cherishing the lives and creating a memorable experience for others, all thanks to my beloved mentor - Ms. Tan Swee Kim.

I was in my hometown when I received the news from our leader that our mentor was about to reach her time. I prayed so that her end will be peaceful and as painless as it can be. 2 days after, we were told that she had peacefully passed on.

A month later, we went on a trip to visit our mentor’s family to learn more about her. Her family was very welcoming. From their story, we learnt that our mentor is very much loved and cherished by all those around her because she is kind and selfless. Following this, we prepared for the workshop.

As we go through the ceremony and finally the final presentation and sending off, I can’t help but shed some tears as the video of her last singing played at the front. How can someone who was suffering from late-stage cancer appeared so tough and keep on smiling-indeed she was a very strong warrior. May you rest in peace, Ms. Tan Swee Kim and thank you for everything you have taught us.

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want."

I've always wondered what it is like to be a participant in Silent Mentor. One thought of increase in medical knowledge or precision in surgical techniques. However, I was wrong. More than medical knowledge, Silent Mentor impacted me emotionally and spiritually.

Throughout the program, from visiting my mentor's family and going through the workshops, I can't help but ponder on the meaning of life and our purpose on earth. I'm especially in awe of my mentor Miss Tan Swee Kim, who selflessly gives herself in hopes to be a blessing to others. Even as her family was sharing about her charitable acts, I could sense that indeed she has a beautiful and generous heart.

As the final ceremony came to an end, I was moved to tears by the video of her singing. There was such joy in her despite the suffering she had to endure.

One key lesson that I learnt was gratitude is a virtue. Gratefulness leads to generosity. Life is short, and death is inevitable. When we cherish those little moments in life with our loved ones, we learn how to be thankful. And this act of being grateful leads us to freely and willingly use our time and ability to help others. Indeed, it is always more blessed to give than to receive.

I am truly grateful to be a part of this Silent Mentor Program as it was a once in a lifetime experience for me. I have known about this program through my colleagues and peers who have mentioned that they truly gained a lot of knowledge in different aspects through this program. I learnt not only the basic clinical skills but the importance of empathetic value in life. The mentors inspiring life stories and noble sacrifices have taught me to always give to our society and community in any aspects that we could. Besides, I am also grateful for the opportunity to perform and practice the procedures during the workshop. The doctors were kind and patient in teaching us the right technique although some procedures needed multiple attempts for the correct technique. I could not thank my Silent Mentors, their families, friends and the doctors enough for allowing me the amazing opportunity. I truly hope that I can become a doctor with compassion, empathy and respect for my patients. Again, thank you for making me a part of this wonderful and humbling experience.

Silent Mentor Program is something that I have always wanted to join ever since I joined 1st year. I am more than grateful to be part of this wonderful experience in my last week in medical school. I learnt that being a doctor goes beyond the knowledge itself in this program. Being able to learn about my mentor’s life experiences as well as their reason to join this Silent Mentor Program is really an eye-opening experience to me. I am very thankful to all my fellow batchmates, juniors, doctors and also the Silent Mentor committee members who were really working together throughout the program to make it to be successful and for us to achieve our aim. My mentor is really someone I look up to and will forever remember her contribution and selfless act throughout my life. I hope that I will be able to become a good doctor and be able to help those in need in the future despite how hard things become. Thank you once again to everyone.

In the past week, my participation in the Silent Mentor Program has been a profound and enlightening experience. First and foremost, delving into the life of my assigned mentor provided valuable insights. Her journey left a lasting impact on me, influencing my perspective on life. Beyond that, the program had a great effect on both volunteers and participants. It became clear that the shared experiences shaped us to be more empathetic. The mental and spiritual impact was definitely an experience that could not be bought anywhere. Furthermore, the program has reminded me the inevitability of death. This reflection served as a reminder to live life to the fullest. The emphasis on giving back to society and doing good in daily life became a guiding principle. The Silent Mentor Program, in just one week, not only broadened my understanding of life and death but also instilled a sense of purpose in contributing positively to the world around me. I thank everyone for the great opportunity and to the people who have helped and guided us all throughout without wanting anything in return. Thank you.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the experience I obtained from the Silent Mentor Program was unparalleled. My mentor, through her phenomenal altruism and generosity, had unknowingly left an indelible mark on those of us who had the opportunity to participate in this program. She had taught all of us far beyond the medical aspect of which she had originally intended. I personally feel that I have grown exponentially in the emotional, mental and spiritual sense in the short span of a couple of weeks, a feat that was made possible, all thanks to the simple act of giving, a value which my mentor had hold dear to her, and something that I would strive to emulate as much as possible in everything that I do henceforth. I also feel that this is an invaluable experience that every medical student/professional should try to indulge in should they have the opportunity. I’m also thankful for her family for being extremely accommodating to us, and I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Mr Sia and his team, for their selfless effort in making this program the success that it is, and that many of us would not have been able to grasp this chance had it not been for their unwavering and tireless volunteerism. Thank you always!

Throughout this journey, I have come to realize the immense power of selflessness. My mentor, Ms Tan Swee Kim even until the end of her life, exemplified selflessness in its truest form. She continued to give and give, without seeking anything in return. Her dedication to making a difference and impacting the lives of others has left an indelible mark on our hearts.

It is clear to see that my mentor is greatly loved by the people around her. Her presence has touched the lives of many, whether it be through her words, her actions, or simply by being herself. Through her life, she has inspired people to do more, to be more, and to strive for excellence in all that they do. Her legacy is a shining example of the power of love, kindness, and empathy.

In today's fast-paced world, it’s too easy to become consumed by the demands of everyday life. We often find ourselves racing from one commitment to the next, seldom pausing to contemplate the inevitable conclusion of our time on this earth. Our experience with this program has served as an important reminder that amidst the chaos of life, it is crucial to take the time to reflect on death.

This program has taught us to confront the reality of death in a meaningful way. We’ve gained a new perspective of life and we realized that every moment we are given is a precious gift. Our mentor's acceptance of her own mortality and her unwavering commitment to give to others, even in the face of suffering, has been a source of tremendous inspiration to us.

In conclusion, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the Silent Mentor Program. The lessons learned and the experiences gained will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We are committed to carrying forward the legacy of our mentor by striving to emulate her selflessness, embody her compassion, and work tirelessly to make a positive impact within the medical community and beyond.

I am deeply grateful to all the mentors, their family members and to all those who have supported us on this incredible journey. May we all be inspired to live with purpose, to love unconditionally, and to give generously, just as our mentors have shown us.

I was involved in the 36th Silent Mentor Workshop over the past week. I was not sure what to expect at the start of the program, however at the end of it, I realised how lucky and blessed I am to be a part of this program. The organiser has been very professional and helpful throughout not just to us participants but to the families of our Silent Mentors. The structure of the program was not only respectful to our Silent Mentors but allowed us to grasp and experience the human side of medicine that we often forget. We were very blessed to have formed a close relationship with the family of our mentor Mr. Tan.

The procedures we learnt during the period were also memorable, as these are procedures, we would not have had the opportunity to learn until much later in our careers. The lecturers and doctors who took the time out of their busy schedule were also very kind, patient and willing to guide us throughout the process.

Overall, the most important lesson I have learnt is not the procedures but from the life and philosophy of my mentor Mr. Tan who lived a life of giving.

The Silent Mentor Program was a good learning experience I had. As a final year medical student, it has taught me how to have gratitude and the care towards others. My mentor was a hero to me as he thought of contributing to be part of medical research and to teach medical students procedures that we won’t even be able to perform until we become medical officers. I am really grateful to be part of the Silent Mentor team before I graduated. It has made me realise that I would one day want to donate my body to the Silent Mentor Program to help the upcoming medical students when I have passed away from the very Earth we walk on.

Silent Mentor Program has helped me to sharpen my procedural skills & anatomical knowledge. It is a once in a life opportunity to be able to practise the skills, thanks to the kindness of the Silent Mentors. To add on, learning about the Silent Mentor's background & life experiences during the home visit had taught me to be more respectful towards all patients, and to treat them as humans & not merely a diagnosis/disease.

I was juggling through the workshop during an extremely packed and busy schedule. The workshop just made the schedule even worse and I don't think I properly immersed myself in the emotional complexity of it until it neared its end. For me, the workshop was about learning new skill sets even after meeting the family members. I think I was too busy to have any sort of emotional attachment towards the mentor. Up until the 3rd day of cleaning and preparing the mentor, I suddenly felt a heavy sense of burden and pity towards the mentor. I realised the entire team was responsible for caring for him even after his death and that sparked a sense of gratitude I have never felt before. During the coffining session, it then really hit me, how noble my mentor was. How only the purest of hearts could donate their bodies to the medical world like this. As we walked down the hill, escorting the bodies to the bus parking area, a man in front of me said he was a potential Silent Mentor and he came here to check things out before signing up. He was very impressed and said he'll definitely sign up for it. It amazed me how the mentors continue to inspire different people at different stages of the workshop despite being silent. It is like a chain reaction, spreading kindness and selflessness.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program was an eye-opening experience, merging theory with hands-on medical practice. The dedicated trainers and lecturers taught us a lot, boosting my confidence to perform medical procedures as a future medical practitioner. Navigating through various medical tasks highlighted the importance of empathy in healthcare. Witnessing the complexities of the human body deepened my understanding of the balance between science and compassion. This experience has not only deepened my medical knowledge but has also fostered profound respect for individuals who selflessly become our Silent Mentors, with a special acknowledgement to my Silent Mentor, Mr. Tan Hoi Choi. Additionally, the unwavering support from the Silent Mentor's family members played a pivotal role in the success of this program.

When I initially found out that I was going to participate in this program, I was worried about the busy schedule as I was in my final year. However, I quickly realised that, despite the workload that comes with being a medical student participant, the experience is truly worth it. This program does so much more than get hands on experience learning and practising new techniques. I managed to bond with my Silent Mentor & his family, gaining an added perspective throughout the workshops. His selfless gift has taught me the importance of understanding and respecting everyone through empathy and giving. I am truly grateful for this experience and will remember it for as long as I practice medicine.

Silent Mentor Program made me appreciate the life of mentors. In which their noble act of providing me edification from their history, family, and body, is indeed an invaluable learning experience. Being part of this Silent Mentor Program has given me a different perspective towards learning, respect and gratitude. The opportunities and teachings to help us learn. Different forms of respect to our beloved Silent Mentor and each other. As well as gratitude for our Silent Mentor and his family members for being with us through this journey. These factors only widen the horizon in our medical career. As an individual, this experience has made me view things in a different light. I would always want to be reminded of this very opportunity to be part of this program as it has made all of us much better equipped to what has to come in this next part of our journey as medical professionals. As a medical student, my self-expectation is to be a good doctor and care for my patients with the most sincerest and kindest heart for it shall be a reflection of how my mentors have shone their wisdom in different forms such as my beloved Silent Mentor Mr. Wong. Silent Mentor Program has been one of the special learning platform that UM had offered and to be part of it is always one of my dreams in medical school ever since I was introduced by this program when I was a first-year medical student. Throughout this program, I have learnt to know a person background better, including the family members. This one-week program was indeed hectic with me juggling between classes and other activities. Nevertheless, I appreciated the learning opportunity to perform essential procedures while at the same time feeling reassured that it is safe to make mistakes. The highlight of my learning curve through this program was to empathically revered our mentors around the clock as they have sacrificed themselves for the better future of medical fraternity.

The Silent Mentor Workshop was an enlightening journey. Though I never directly met the patient, their silent teachings were profound. Initially uncertain, I soon realized this unique mentor communicated differently – teaching me to observe with not just ears but also heart and eyes. Their silence spoke volumes about emotions, fortitude, and aspirations. Another heartfelt memory for me was the opportunity to witness and actively participate in a religious ceremony from a different culture. It was an experience that broadened my perspective and instilled in me a deep sense of respect and appreciation for the diversity of beliefs and traditions in the medical field. Moreover, the responsibility of leading the choreography and preparing for a performance within a tightly packed schedule was both challenging and immensely rewarding. It pushed me beyond my limits, demanding creativity, efficiency, and effective teamwork. Despite the time constraints, the collective dedication and synergy within our team resulted in a performance that reflected our commitment and passion, fostering a sense of achievement and unity among us. This experience emphasized that being a doctor transcends medical knowledge; it’s about empathizing with people’s experiences. Grateful for this unconventional learning, I thank the organizer and this Silent Mentor for teaching me empathy without words. I’ll carry these lessons, aspiring to be a more compassionate doctor.

I'm very grateful to have been selected as a participant in the 35th Silent Mentor Workshop, which took place from September 19th to 24th, 2023. Over the course of this one-week workshop, my learning extended far beyond the realms of medical knowledge, encompassing the invaluable lessons of what it truly means to be a good doctor – lessons that no textbook or lecture could ever impart. The Silent Mentors themselves embody the epitome of selflessness and nobility, serving as an inspiration to us all. I extend my deepest gratitude to the families of these Silent Mentors for their unwavering support.

I am also immensely thankful to the dedicated lecturers who devoted their time and expertise, even after long hours at the hospital, to guide us throughout the workshop. Their commitment to our growth and learning is truly commendable. This week has been a profoundly memorable experience as I prepare to enter my fifth year of medical school. I am now more determined than ever to strive towards becoming a doctor who not only possesses medical knowledge but also upholds the highest moral and ethical standards, and who carries the weight of responsibility with grace and compassion.

I recently had the privilege of participating in a Silent Mentor workshop, which is a cadaver workshop for medical students. This program provided me with the opportunity to learn new procedures and anatomy, while also teaching me the importance of empathy and compassion.

As a medical student, it is essential that I learn how to perform various procedures, such as chest tube insertion, central venous line insertion, suturing, and intubation. The Silent Mentor Program gave me the opportunity to practice these procedures in a safe and controlled environment. I was able to learn from experienced lecturer and get hands-on experience with our Silent Mentors.

In addition to learning new procedures, the Silent Mentor Program also taught me about the importance of empathy and compassion. The body that we used in the workshop were donated by people who wanted to make a difference in the education of future doctors. I was humbled by their generosity and felt a deep sense of responsibility to learn everything I could from them.

During the program, we also had the opportunity to meet with the families of Silent Mentors. This was a very moving experience, and it helped me to understand the human side of medicine. I learned that patients are not just diseases or conditions; they are people with families and loved ones. This experience has made me even more committed to providing my patients with compassionate and empathetic care.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in the Silent Mentor Program. It was a valuable learning experience that has helped me to become a better medical student. I am confident that the skills and knowledge I gained from this program will help me to provide my patients with the best possible care.

I have just entered my 5th year in UM Medicine. I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Silent Mentor Workshop, which has profoundly impacted my journey as a medical student. This experience was nothing short of transformative, offering invaluable insights and skills that I believe will shape my career in medicine.

Engaging in the program allowed me to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Many workshops have been prepared for us participants, namely: chest tube insertion, suturing, intubation and much more. Through those workshops, I was able to study human anatomy in an unparalleled depth, gaining a three-dimensional understanding of the human body that no textbook or lecture could provide. It was astonishing to witness the intricate complexities and variations of the human anatomy firsthand.

Moreover, this program has fostered a deep sense of respect and humility within me. Working with cadavers who are known as the ‘Silent Mentors’, I was reminded of the incredible gift of life and the profound responsibility we have as future healthcare providers. It instilled in me a sense of reverence for those who have donated their bodies for the advancement of medical education, and I am committed to honouring their legacy through compassionate patient care. I have noticed that not only have we, UM Medical Students benefitted, but also many batches of Master’s students and also students from Monash University.

In conclusion, my participation in the Silent Mentor Program has been a pivotal moment in my medical education. It has deepened my anatomical knowledge, nurtured a sense of respect for the human body and the donors who enable our learning. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity and look forward to applying the lessons and insights gained from this experience throughout my medical career.

I distinctly remember that the reason I put Universiti Malaya as my first choice while applying for universities was for the Silent Mentor Program offered. Four years later, I found myself volunteering for the event and watched as my seniors learned from their mentors. I instantly knew that I was interested in joining as a participant myself. The experience was far greater than I expected. It taught me things I'd otherwise take years to learn and allowed me to gain the experience I wanted in a safe space. The program helped me explore my interests and hone my skills. It taught me to be disciplined, compassionate, and respectful. In every diagnosis and every care I provide in the future, my mentor's memory will live on in my heart. Entering the Silent Mentor Program, there was a sudden shift in my perspective towards life. Prior to this, I have never thought of death as a way to give back to the others. I have never had the realization on how much strength one should have when they decide that they would become Silent Mentors or donate their body to the advancement of science. This all changed when I got to be under the tutelage of Madam Chia, my Silent Mentor who was the epitome of selflessness. Even though I knew her in death, she felt like a mother to me. Without a word spoken, she taught me surgical knowledge more than I ever could have learned from textbooks. Before her unfortunate passing, she asked us to pledge and become a doctor of good conscience, high morality, and responsibility in life. I made a promise to myself that I would not dishonor her and vowed to fulfil her hopes and wishes. Throughout the event, it was fascinating to learn regarding other practices and religion. Without caring about race, we see the Malaysian spirit came together. A spirit that was cultivated through good nurture and years of living harmoniously and peacefully with one and other. I truly appreciate this in a sense that, despite all our differences, deep down, we are still human. To end my reflection, I would like to thank Madam Chia again for all that she has done. In my career, I would carry a bit of her in every suture that I tied, in every knot that I shall do, and in every incision I would carve. She would be there, in spirit. Thank you, Madam Chia. May you rest in peace.

My week in the Silent Mentor Program was truly enlightening. I gained valuable clinical skills, from mastering various suturing techniques and intubation to confidently inserting a chest tube. The UM Silent Mentor Program had been a beneficial experience for me and so much more than what I had expected. Not only did I learn valuable knowledge from my Silent Mentors and trainers, I also learned to care for and respect my Silent Mentors through the simple ritual of cleansing them every morning and evening.

They had so selflessly submitted their flesh and bone to our cuts and stitches so that we may gain knowledge for our future practice as a medical doctor. For this alone, I am forever grateful. I am also grateful to the family members who had fulfilled our mentors' wish and allowed us to learn from them. What I have taken away from this program is that there is so much more to medicine than just knowledge. There is also a human aspect to medicine, a kind of empathy, mutual respect and selflessness that my Silent Mentors have taught me and that I will strive to show my future patients too.

Lastly, a huge thanks to all our trainers and coordinators for sacrificing their nights for us, coming from as far as Taiping to teach us, while at the same time also juggling their own clinical work. I hope that I have honoured their time and effort by absorbing what they have taught me and utilising it in the future.

The Silent Mentor Program has been an experience that I am grateful for to have been able to partake in. Thank you to the professors and doctors who took time from their busy schedules to teach us the procedures that we will encounter in the future. Besides, being able to learn anatomy and visualise the anatomy in real time, an opportunity normally missed in the busy operating theatres.

Thank you to the Silent Mentors as well. Overall, the program has been carried out with utmost professionalism and respect to the Silent Mentors and even the medical students.

The program is definitely worth it, a highlight of the weeks leading up to the beginning of my final year as a medical student.

The Silent Mentor Program has taught me so much over the span of 1 week. I can safely say that I have grown not only in terms of my medical knowledge but also my emotions and character. This program has taught me that one can still benefit others even when they have passed and all it takes is a good heart and a noble sacrifice. As much as it was to donate their body for the benefit of us students, I understand that it must not have been easy for our Silent Mentor’s family and we are truly grateful for their willingness to participate in our program.

Apart from that, not forgetting the great amount of medical knowledge that I have gained from this workshop. The fact that I had the opportunity to get a hands-on experience is truly invaluable. This training is something that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.

To be part of the 35th Silent Mentor Workshop was truly an honour and unforgettable experience for me. It’s so impactful how just a few days can change your life, confidence and experience as a medical student and a future medical practitioner. I am so grateful to have been able to learn so much about the mentors and their families. It is definitely not easy for family members to process their grief, but the respect and comfort given through the program is something I will always cherish. I am exceptionally thankful to the mentors who have taken this noble vow for medical education. I truly made sure to learn as much as I could from the sessions and am forever grateful of their sacrifices.

From the start of the program where we learned about the life journey of our Silent Mentor Mdm Ong from her beloved family members, to attending workshops and learning from our Silent Mentor, and finally to the gratitude ceremony, the entire experience has been extremely rewarding and memorable. Words can never express enough how grateful I am for the selfless contribution and dedication of our Silent Mentor as well as her beloved family members.

Madam Ong Lay Lay’s choice to dedicate her body for the benefit of medical training was a noble decision. I hope she could see from up there how impactful her contribution is, not just in training us to be better doctors but also shaping us to be doctors with compassion and empathy. Being almost my mother’s age, she reminded me that every patient is a daughter, a mother or even a sister and to always offer them with the same level of care I would do for my own mother. I am also deeply grateful to know that there are people like her who support me in this journey by dedicating their bodies for my learning and I owe it to Madam Ong Lay Lay to do my best and be a good doctor one day.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program, where Madam Ong Lay Lay generously donated her body for medical education and research, was an incredibly humbling experience. Witnessing the selflessness of Madam Ong and her family in contributing to medical learning left a profound impact on me. It emphasized the invaluable role of donors and their families in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. Through this program, I gained a deeper understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and the intricacies of medical procedures. It allowed me to appreciate the immense responsibility and respect that came with working in the medical field. The Silent Mentor Program has taught me to be grateful, not just to the donors, but also to the doctors who taught us, and the volunteers who sacrificed their time to ensure that the program ran smoothly.  The importance of each role in this program gave me an insight to my future as a doctor, where teamwork, communication and understanding one another is required.  Besides, I have learned to be more empathetic.  Madam Ong Lay Lay's life story touched me deeply, as to how she would always find ways to help those around her, even in her passing.  The reminders from Madam Ong Lay Lay's friends and family will surely stay with me always.  "Be a good doctor in the future".

I have learned a lot through this program in which I would not be able to if not for Madam Ong Lay Lay’s generosity. I realize how important it is to be a good and safe doctor, as many patients are depending on us for the goodness of their health. I was touched when Madam Ong’s friend was inspired by her selfless act and wanted to follow in her footsteps by joining this program as well. Prior to the workshop, I had an immense fear of the emotional impact this Silent Mentor will have on me in regard to working with a cadaver. However, I am glad that I was proven wrong. Madam Ong Lay Lay alongside the other 2 mentors actually provided me with comfort throughout the entire process. I was once again reminded that the hands, attitude and demeanor of a doctor is one of the most powerful things in the life of a sick patient. Even without words, a living heartbeat, or the ability to breathe, these mentors have been one of the greatest teachers I have ever encountered. This cadaveric workshop is an intense, emotional, and intellectually enriching experience like no other. It instills a deep respect for donors, offers invaluable educational opportunities, and shapes participants in profound ways. It's an experience that can stay with you throughout your professional journey, serving as a reminder of the human side of medicine and healthcare. I would like to once again thank all the Silent Mentors and their families for providing me with such an invaluable experience.

Words are never enough to express how grateful, and how thankful I am to be given the opportunity to participate in the 34th Silent Mentor. It was such a humbling yet an amazing experience for me, seeing how selfless the silent mentors are, whom still contributes even after the end of their life.

I also wanted to highlight that this program is nothing like I have ever experienced- learning from medical textbooks and lectures, practicing on mannequins are really nothing compared to the feeling and the experience gained while performing skills or learning from the silent mentors.

This program helped to boost my self-esteem and confidence in performing medical/surgical skills and it made me feels prepared and adequate as a final year medical student going into housemanship soon.

To the Silent Mentors, thank you for willing to dedicating your body for the betterment of medicine, and for helping me to grow to become an aspiring doctor.

My experience taking part in Silent Mentor programme was a valuable one and I will be forever grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of it. My time in Silent Mentor has been a valuable and humbling experience.  Each day starts and ends with us caring for our mentor, ensuring that the faith entrusted by the mentors and their families to us are met with the utmost respect and care. And in between that, we had the opportunity to practise and learn skills that we otherwise would not have been able to do. Our mentors graciously allowed us to learn from them, giving us the opportunity to correct our errors and train to become skilled future doctors. I hope to one day become a competent doctor and indirectly return the favour that our mentors gave by providing the best possible care to all patients. Medical school taught me the science and skills to save a life, but as a doctor, such knowledge is just one part of the puzzle. In treating a patient, we must approach them with empathy, respect, and compassion. This silent mentor programme has helped me learn how to bridge the gap between the science of treating a disease and the skills of treating a soul. Therefore, we are forever grateful for the sacrifices of our silent mentors.

This Silent Mentor programme has truly been a once in a lifetime event for me. When I first got accepted into the program, I was delighted as there were limited spots available. I had great expectations on how this program would enlighten me on the basic clinical skills and procedures. However, it has blown away my expectations out of the park. It was a completely unique and holistic approach from start to finish involving the lives of Silent Mentors, taking good care of them each morning, having close relationships with family members, a gratitude ceremony and the final farewell ceremony. It was all fantastically structured in a way that we students truly understand and appreciate the Silent Mentors and their noble contributions to the medical field. This program has not only allowed me to be more comfortable in doing procedures but has also allowed me to become a better caring, and compassionate doctor by treating the patients as human beings rather than the disease alone. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and will never forget the noble sacrifices made by our mentors in this 34th edition of Silent Mentor programme.

Silent mentor programme to me is a life changing experience that I'll forever cherish. I learnt not only medical knowledge but also learnt the importance of caring for our mentor and thanking them for their noble sacrifices. Being a part of the gratitude ceremony and the cremation ceremony felt like a proper farewell bid to our mentors. I am also very grateful for the doctors who were very patient and kind in teaching us the procedures although some had to be repeated many times for us to finally correctly perform the procedures. I cannot thank our silent mentors, their families and the doctors enough for allowing us to be a part of this heart touching, humbling experience. I hope that I can pay them back by becoming a great doctor and fulfilling their final wishes which I promise to do so. Thank you once again. Words cannot thank you all enough.

This programme was the most valuable experience I have experienced so far throughout my medical school. Definitely an eye-opening and life-changing experience. It changes my perception towards death. This one-week programme really emphasise that we need to see and perceive a patient as one whole human being, with their own personal stories, baggages, personalities and family members. My gratefulness towards late Madam Tan Bee Eng and her family members is beyond description. I can only imagine the emotional roller coaster that the family need to go through from the beginning until the end of this programme.

I sincerely appreciated for having the opportunity to participate in the 34th silent mentor workshop. The experience was deeply reflective and left a profound impact on me. Silent mentorship is a unique program in which the body of a deceased person who donated their body to science is used for medical education and training. The program is an important way to honor the donors’ lives and their contribution to medical education.

Initially, I was nervous about the experience. I had never been in close proximity to a human cadaver before, let alone one that had been donated for medical education. However, the workshop facilitators provided a safe and respectful environment that allowed us to approach the experience with reverence and dignity.

As the participants of the workshop, we involved ourselves throughout the program by first visiting the silent mentor’s family members to know more about them. We learned about their lives and their reasons for donating their bodies to science. It was a humbling experience to realize that we were about to embark on a journey of learning from individuals who had given their bodies to us in the hope that we could use their gift to improve patient care.

The hands-on experience of working with the silent mentors was both challenging and rewarding. We were guided through a series of exercises that allowed us to observe and learn from the silent mentors in front of us. We were encouraged to explore, touch, and feel the structures of the human body, and to appreciate the intricacies of the human anatomy. We could have the opportunity to perform some procedures on the patient such as ETT intubation which was very fruitful to me.

As I reflect on this experience, I am struck by the importance of empathy in medicine. It is easy to become lost in the technical aspects of medical care and to forget the human beings behind the diagnoses and procedures. As my silent mentor left a video for us, mentioning the sickening attitude of the medical professionals towards the patients was really hurting and disappointing and he hoped that we would be a caring doctor rather than a smart doctor. Working with the silent mentors reminded me that each person we encounter as healthcare providers has a unique story and a rich history that shapes their health outcomes. It is our responsibility to honour and respect these stories and to use our skills and knowledge to improve patient care.

In conclusion, the silent mentor workshop was a profound and humbling experience. It provided me with a unique opportunity to learn from individuals who had given their bodies to science and to reflect on my own values as a future healthcare provider. I am grateful for this experience and I will carry the lessons I learned forward into my medical practice.

Cleansing of the Silent Mentors was one of the tasks we did almost every morning during the Silent Mentor Programme, biologically it was no easy task to disrupt my circadian cycle waking up when the sun is yet to be in the sky and follow through with other responsibilities throughout the day until midnight. Thus, this felt as a responsibility to be completed rather than a spiritually fulfilling mission, scrubbing in with gloves and scrubs, carefully cleansing our mentor, and preventing disease transmission. The cadaver felt like a specimen to me. It was only till the initiation where the missing piece was found, the stimulus through my eyes and ears created a domino of biochemical reactions in my brain and everything started to make sense. As we revealed the silent mentor’s face (mentor was well-groomed by us mentees) to the mentor’s family members, instinctively the family members burst into tears, rushed to the mentor and caressed the mentor without gloves, PPE or whatever protective measures we students use to protect our own safety. That’s the moment of enlightenment where our cadaver comes to life in my mind’s eye. Our mentor too is someone’s husband who shares a bed every night and brings bread to someone’s table. He too was someone’s father who taught offsprings the way to negotiate through the twists and turns of life. He too might be the only one in the family who knows how to fuel a car at the petrol station. It is the people around us who gave us meaning in life during this ephemeral lifetime, and we can only continue to live on within them as our genes continue to be passed down and mutated one generation at a time. Though I signed up to be scientifically enlightened (which of course I did with the help of passionate mentors and trainers whom I deeply appreciate), I was enlightened more on the value of life and how time is the only currency that really matters.

The silent mentor program was a life changing experience for me as it helps me develop the humane aspect of me as a medical student, which no book can ever teach. This experience was larger than life because it showed that even after your last breath, you’re still providing service by donating your body for the purpose of learning for us in the field of medicine. This noble act is the reason why many of us were able to harness our skills and have early exposure on skills which are necessary for us as future doctors. These mentors were once people who lived lives like ours, and now they’re no more, yet, they’ve turned into our silent mentors, providing us with the greatest knowledge and experience no book can ever give. Hence, this wholesome experience had taught me that the human body is only temporary yet, their emotions and services will last a lifetime to those involved. With that, I’m very much thankful to everyone involved in the silent mentor program, especially the mentors for making this experience a life changing one for all of us so that we’ll be more compassionate and loving doctors in the future.

Taking part in silent mentor program was without a doubt a life changing experience. It taught so much. Medically I was exposed to hands on teaching like never before, being able to appreciate real anatomy and being able to do procedures has made me more confident in my medical knowledge. However, my biggest lesson was beyond just medical knowledge. Knowing my mentor, and his family, and his timeless selflessness has changed my view of life. I wish to be as selfless as him.

When I heard about this program 5 years ago when I was a First Year, I was so intrigued by it. It sounded like and looked like a really nice program for us medical student to have the opportunity to learn hands on about all the procedures to be performed by doctors later when we become one. After going through medical school, I always heard about junior doctors being incompetent on doing some of the procedures, not because they are not smart, but they did not have the opportunity to learn the procedures beforehand. So, by having the silent mentor program, I was able to learn the procedures first hand and be a more competent Doctor in the future.

But that is not all that I have learnt during this program. I learn the humanity side of life, of what it actually means to be a doctor and a human being. I learn the true meaning of being selfless, where all my mentors have taken the ultimate sacrifice so that us medical student a.k.a future doctors can learn better hence be able to treat our future patients better. Why is this such true selflessness? Because the silent mentors made the sacrifice to teach us not for us to be able to treat them better but be able to treat everyone else who they don’t even know better. Lastly, from all the stories I’ve learned from the mentors, I have learned to be a compassionate Doctor, and be mindful of everyone’s feelings as we, the Doctors play a big role, not just treating patients by giving medicines but also by providing comfort to the patients and their family members.

Throughout this process, I was able to learn about the story of my mentor Madam Wong Yoke Keng who was an inspirational person in life and even in death continues to give back to others. Her time one this Earth may have been short, but she has left her mark in the hearts of all those who have had the pleasure of knowing her. Our patients are not just bed numbers, diagnosis, interesting cases or jobs to Passover, our patients are people with beautiful lives and meaningful stories, and that is the most important lesson I take away from this workshop. Sincerely, thank you Madam Wong.

Am also grateful to my group members who have been so amazing despite us having to wake up early for so many consecutive days on top of having our typical posting schedules. Thank you, friends!

The silent mentor program is probably one-of-a-kind experience in University of Malaya. Not only it serves as a basic platform to medical students to train surgical procedures, but it also encourages students to be compassionate and treat their patients as fellow human beings.

My mentor in particular was a kind, generous and wise woman. She was both aware about poverty and the climate crisis. She has been a big advocate for the Tzu Chi community and has worked as a finance officer there under the sponsorship bureau. She was an active recycler and cared a lot for the environment too.

Via this program, I learnt that every human being is significant and carries a huge part in the community. We may not be blood related well at least not from the known generations but the impact that we bring about to each other is significant, whether being a sanitary worker or being the prime minister.

The Silent Mentor Program has shaped the way I view life and death.

Death is not to be feared as it is closely intertwined with life. During life, my silent mentor made the bravest decision to pledge her body after death; it taught me that even after death, you can contribute to a greater good and leave an impact on people, even those you've never met.

The gesture touched my heart because their kindness and love were boundless and pure. The entire experience was eye-opening and had reminded me of my passion in medicine to serve, to help, to heal with love, respect and empathy.

Thank you to the silent mentors, their families, volunteers, lecturers, staff and colleagues for this wonderful program; it would not have happened without each and everyone of you.

I am pretty sure that almost all medical students in UM would know about Silent Mentor Program after starting medical school here for some time, but the full experience of participating in this workshop was so much different than what I imagined. Weeks prior to the workshop, we were already divided into our respective groups for the purpose of conducting home visits to the families of our respective mentors. Some of these families had only just recovered from the recent passing of their loved ones but were still happy to give us a warm welcome upon arrival. That friendliness and open attitude throughout the sharing session regarding the mentor’s life story was one of the more humbling moments of this program for me. It gave me a new perspective towards the practice of medicine, reminding me that every patient is part of a bigger social structure and therefore should be treated with care and accountability. I would like to give thanks to the workshop organizers, coordinators, lecturers, volunteers, participants and of course, to our mentors and families for making this program a success and priceless learning experience for us.

Completing the Silent Mentor Program was an incredibly humbling and eye-opening experience for me. I had the opportunity to learn from the selfless gift of individuals who had donated their bodies to medical education and research, and it was a privilege to be a part of this remarkable program.

One of the most important lessons I learned during this program was the importance of compassion and empathy in medicine. It was easy to get caught up in the technical details of anatomy and physiology, but at the core of the Silent Mentor Program was a deep respect and appreciation for the individuals who had donated their bodies to help us learn.

I was struck by the thoughtfulness and generosity of the silent mentors and their families, who had made the difficult decision to donate their remains for the benefit of others. It made me realize the importance of treating each patient with compassion and respect, and to always remember that there is a human being behind every medical case.

Another important lesson I learned was the value of teamwork and collaboration in medicine. Throughout the program, I had the opportunity to work with other medical professionals and students from my batchmates. We shared our knowledge and experiences and worked together to develop a deeper understanding of the human body and its functions. Besides, we also get to learn different medical procedures such as intubation, suturing, chest tube insertion, urinary catheter insertion, administration of drug in chemo port, tibial plating and Pfannenstiel incision.

Finally, completing the Silent Mentor Program reinforced my commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. The program showed me that there is always more to learn, and that even the most experienced medical professionals can benefit from continuing education and training.

In conclusion, completing the Silent Mentor Program was a truly transformative experience for me. It helped me develop a deeper understanding of the human body and its functions, and reinforced the importance of compassion, empathy, teamwork, and lifelong learning in medicine. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the silent mentors and their families, and I will carry their lessons and legacies with me throughout my career.

I am extremely grateful for this opportunity given by the Silent Mentor Program. This is truly a unique and valuable initiative that provides medical students the opportunity to learn from the bodies of mentors who have selflessly donated their bodies to medical education. This program has taught and trained us skills that we have learnt theoretically only and would not be able to practice physically during medical school. After the program, I realized there was a vast difference between theoretical imagination and real-life hands-on experience. I had a deeper understanding of the anatomy and physiology taught in lectures previously and thus improve my diagnostic ability and clinical skills. The lecturers that taught us the anatomy and procedural skills were very knowledgeable, kind and patient and I would like to thank them for willing to volunteer in this program. This program has also made a huge impact and made me reaffirm the importance of treating our silent mentors with dignity and respect, ensuring that they are handled with care and sensitivity. This experience has fostered a greater appreciation of the human body and the importance of treating patients with empathy and respect.

I am honored that I was able to participate in the 34th Silent Mentor Program which was an experience of a lifetime to me. This program taught me things my medical textbook did not such as the compassion, kindness, selflessness and sacrifice. All this while, we could only read or watch YouTube videos on how certain procedures are done which is nothing compared to actually performing them. The two main station that caught my attention the most was intubation and chest tube insertion as these procedures are so complex and vital to be done correctly and as quick as possible to save a patient’s life. Without this program and our selfless silent mentors, I would be performing these living saving procedures for the first time on a real patient not knowing if what I am doing is right or wrong. The thought of that is very scary! The doctors that conducted the workshop were very well equipped with the knowledge and was able to guide us step by step. This workshop also motivated me to work on my procedures skills so that I will be a better doctor in the future. Besides that, I really like how every morning we had to clean and prepare our silent mentors. Doing this every day, makes me feel very close to my mentor. Even though I did not know her very well, sending her off on her final journey was very difficult. I am very thankful for this opportunity and very grateful to my silent mentors. I will always remember and carry with me what I’ve learnt from this program both knowledge and spiritually for the rest of my life.

No experience in my (almost) 5 years of degree has ever come close to what I have experienced in the past week. I was given the opportunity to perform procedures first-hand and I know, nothing beats learning than seeing them outside of textbooks and performing them; as experience is something you can’t simply forget. This was my first time ever joining a program like this and it has been a humbling experience to say the least; that one minute of silent prayer that we do every time before we get to cleaning our mentors served as a reminder that our mentors were someone’s mother, someone’s brother, someone’s daughter.

To be able to contribute and entrust their bodies in our care even after their deaths is not something everyone can do. And for that, we express our utmost gratitude to all of our Silent Mentors and their family and friends. Just know that there was so much more that we’ve learned throughout this workshop than just acquiring surgical skills. Through our Silent Mentors, I’ve learned respect, compassion, empathy, and love. Through them, I’ve learned to see patients beyond their diseases, to see them as an individual who has a life outside of the consultation rooms and not just another case from a textbook. They may be silent but their silence spoke the loudest.

I dare to make a promise; to promise that I will try my very best to apply the values that I’ve gained from this experience to become good doctors and I will make my Silent Mentor proud.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to join this Silent Mentor Program. At first, due to the intense competition with others to participate in this program, I decided to leave it to fate whether I get to join this program. At that moment, I did not feel any regret if I were not able to join this program, however, now I feel very lucky and very grateful that I was able to join it in my final year. Silent Mentor really opened my eyes in so many ways that no textbook can ever do. Clinical skills were taught by the doctors do helps me implementing what I learn from my textbook, but important qualities like empathy and passion are priceless lessons gained for my journey as future medical practitioner. Thank you again for introducing me to this program. Last but not least, thank you to our Silent Mentor Madam Chan who sacrificed a lot to teach us medical students even if we never met face to face previously.

It was definitely an experience I cannot forget. Apart from learning to do procedures on the mentors, I learnt the importance of respect. From handling the mentors as we received them at the Silent Mentor Centre to participating in the confining ceremony, we were taught to handle our mentors with utmost care. These lessons are very valuable as we learned it through experience we gained from this program. Our mentors are no strangers as they have become a part of our lives. Bits and pieces of their lives will forever embed in our memories until the end of time. They have left a massive impact in our lives as well as the medical field. Thank you, mentors!
