曾经听过这么一句话:“Our ultimate goal, after all, is not a good death but a good life to the very end.”

I hadn’t fully appreciated the Silent Mentor Program until I stood before those who had given their bodies to teach us. Until then, all our learning came from living patients, people who could talk to us, explain their symptoms, and tell us their stories. But through our Silent Mentors, I learned something I never could from words alone. I had the chance to perform my first intubation, chest tube, and central line, and to understand real human anatomy in a way textbooks cannot offer. We were the last to learn from them, and their kindness will stay with me as I grow into the doctor I hope to be.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn from my silent mentor. This experience has taught me more than just procedural skills; it has reminded me of the importance of compassion, respect, and humility in becoming a doctor. Even though it is very hard to wake up early every day, I believe it also teaches us discipline.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful and soul-stirring experiences in my journey as a medical student. What began as a practical week to hone surgical skills quickly transformed into a deeply emotional and humanistic journey that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
The experience began with a visit to the hometown of our silent mentor, the late Mr. Lee Tee Meng, in Muar. Meeting his family—seeing where he lived, hearing about his life, values, and character—was profoundly humbling. His family welcomed us with warmth, generosity, and a sense of quiet pride in his final act of altruism. It was there, in that intimate space filled with photographs, memories, and stories, that I first understood the depth of his sacrifice. Mr. Lee Tee Meng wasn’t just a donor—he was a father, a friend, a man who lived with purpose and chose to continue giving, even in death.
As the week unfolded, we learned a variety of crucial surgical procedures—suturing, chest tube insertions, tracheostomies, and more. But each incision was not just a clinical step; it was a lesson in trust, dignity, and the weight of responsibility. We were constantly reminded that our silent mentors had once been living, breathing people with families who loved them, and this awareness permeated every action we took.
What set this program apart was its humanistic core. From the initiation ceremony to the final gratitude rituals, we were encouraged to reflect not only as students but as future healers. We cleaned and prepared our mentor’s body for the final journey with our own hands—suturing, dressing, and placing him in the coffin—as a mark of respect and closure. It was an emotional moment, standing alongside his family, thanking Mr. Lee Tee Meng not just with words, but with the sincerity of our actions and presence.
By the end of the program, I was left with much more than surgical skills. I had gained a renewed sense of purpose, compassion, and reverence for the lives behind every patient I will meet. Mr. Lee Tee Meng’s selfless gift has left a permanent imprint on my medical journey, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
Thank you, Mr. Lee Tee Meng. Though you were silent in voice, your final act spoke volumes.

Through the Silent Mentor Program, I have learnt the true meaning of humility and generosity. Seeing individuals without prior background in the medical field dedicate themselves to medical education after the end of their lives reminds me of the honour and privilege I have in learning from my silent mentors. I thank my silent mentors, for they have taught me what medicine truly is — a profession rooted not only in science, but in deep compassion, selflessness, and respect for human life. Their final act of giving has instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility to treat every patient with dignity, to always strive for excellence in my practice, and to never take for granted the trust placed in us as future doctors.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most humbling and meaningful experiences of my medical journey. I feel deeply honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to learn through the generosity of someone who chose to serve others even in death.
Through this program, I learned practical skills that are essential in clinical practice—such as nasogastric tube insertion, bladder care, intubation, chest tube insertion, and suturing. But beyond the techniques, what truly stayed with me was the profound lesson in empathy, respect, and gratitude.
This experience reminded me that medicine is not just about procedures, but about people. Every step we took, every skill we practiced, was possible because of someone’s final gift—a gift given selflessly, with the hope that we might one day use what we learned to ease the suffering of others.
It was more than a training session. It was a silent conversation between teacher and student, one that taught us to approach our future patients with gentleness, dignity, and humanity. I carry this lesson with me, and I am sincerely thankful to my Silent Mentor and their loved ones for their trust, their courage, and their incredible act of love.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most profound and humbling experiences in my journey as a medical student. It is a rare privilege to learn from individuals who, even after their passing, choose to dedicate their bodies to our education. These silent mentors—our teachers in the truest sense—have given us something no textbook or lecture ever could: the gift of real, human learning.
Walking into the workshop, I felt a deep sense of reverence. I was not just there to learn anatomy — I was there to honour lives, stories, and sacrifices. Each donor had a name, a family, a life filled with love, struggle, and meaning. They were not cadavers. They were our mentors. Their silence taught us respect, their stillness taught us compassion, and their presence taught us responsibility.
Through the workshop, I developed technical skills and a deeper understanding of the human body, but more importantly, I gained a sense of empathy and humility that will stay with me throughout my career. It reminded me that behind every patient is a person, and behind every diagnosis is a story.
To the silent mentors and their families, I offer my sincerest gratitude. Your generosity and courage have shaped us not only as future doctors but as human beings. You have taught us that the essence of medicine is not just in curing, but in caring—with gentleness, dignity, and respect.
As I move forward in my training, I carry with me the lessons you have silently passed on. I promise to honour your legacy by striving to become a doctor who listens, understands, and heals—not just with knowledge, but with heart.
Thank you for being my teacher.

The Silent Mentor Program was a good experience for me. From start to finish, it was well organised and well executed by Mr Sia and team. He made sure to set the expectations clear from the very beginning, which made it doable as participants despite the high time commitment.
The Silent Mentor Program gave me a fresh pair of glasses through which I now view medicine and its practice. Experiencing the entire process from the home visits to the burial has allowed me to understand better the process of grieving for illness and death.
Beyond that, the workshops were extremely useful in giving me exposure to the various procedures that were covered. One thing that I found inspiring was the willingness of all the trainers to take time out of their undoubtedly busy schedules to come and spend hours teaching us medical students. This spirit of passing on knowledge and skills is something that resonates with me deeply, as it demonstrates the collaborative nature of learning, and it reminds me that we should always have a humble approach to knowledge because it ultimately does not belong to any of us!
A big thanks to everyone who was involved in the 41st Silent Mentor Workshop.

The Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply humbling experience that reshaped my understanding of what it means to be a compassionate and respectful doctor. Through every step, from the home visit to the anatomy sessions, I was constantly reminded that medicine is not just a science, but a deeply human profession rooted in empathy and gratitude.
Learning from someone who has given so selflessly taught me to approach every patient not merely as a case, but as a person with a story, a family, and a life that deserves dignity. Mr. Goh, our silent mentor, has been a powerful source of inspiration. Though we never spoke, his actions spoke louder than words. His willingness to contribute to the education of future doctors, even after death, showed me a rare form of courage and generosity. It is this quiet strength that I hope to emulate in my journey as a doctor, carrying forward the values of humility, service, and lifelong learning.
There was a moment during the program, while gently performing a procedure, when it truly hit me just how much Mr. Goh had sacrificed. He gave us his body, but more than that, he gave us his trust. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility, not only to use this knowledge wisely, but to honour him through the way I treat my future patients. His final lesson to us was one of love and selflessness, and I will carry that with me always.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been an incredible and humbling experience. It’s a rare opportunity that honors the lives of our mentors while allowing medical students to learn and practice valuable clinical skills. The most memorable part for me was the hands-on workshop, where I gained practical experience with procedures that are difficult to access during regular clinical postings. Thanks to the mentors' selfless gift, I was able to learn in a meaningful and respectful way.
This journey also taught me the value of teamwork—especially during the home visits, coffining, and cleaning. I’ve gained not just skills, but friendships and deeper insight into the human side of medicine. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Silent Mentor Program. In just one week, I experienced something that left a profound impact on me, both as a medical student and as a human being.
Each day began before sunrise, as we gathered to care for our silent mentor, cleansing and preparing the body with gentle reverence. At the end of each long day, we returned again to tend to them, always reminded that this was not just a body, but a life once lived, a person once loved.
What made this program truly transformative was the home visit. Meeting the family, hearing stories of their mentor's life, laughter, struggles, and values, it gave soul and meaning to our learning. This is what sets the Silent Mentor Program apart: it doesn’t just teach us anatomy; it teaches us humanity.
Through this experience, I’ve come to understand the immense trust placed in us. Our mentors made the ultimate act of selflessness, to donate their body so future doctors may learn, so future lives may be saved. Their gift was not made for themselves, but for a future they would never see. I often ask myself: so many doctors have benefited from this program, but how many of us have pledged to become donors ourselves? The answer, sadly, is likely few. This only highlights how immense, how courageous, and how noble their decision truly is.
Yet it is not only the mentors who deserve our gratitude. The greatest burden often falls on their families. It is the loved ones who must give the final consent, who must face the pain of a funeral without a body, who endure the heartache all over again when the body is revisited months later. It is like reopening a long-healed wound, painful, emotional, and brave.
To Mr. Goh Jui Leng, my silent mentor, and to his remarkable family, thank you. Your sacrifices have left an indelible mark on me. You have not only taught me medicine, you have taught me compassion, respect, and the sanctity of life.
This week has reshaped the way I see patients and practice medicine. It reminded me that behind every clinical case is a human being with a story, a family, a hope. In the fast pace of hospital corridors, it is easy for us as doctors to become desensitized, to speak of death clinically, to move on quickly, to protect ourselves from emotional fatigue. But this week reminded me that we must never lose our human touch. Every life entrusted to us deserves to be treated with reverence.
The Silent Mentor Program is not just a part of my medical training, it is a cornerstone of the doctor I hope to become.

I recently had the profound privilege of participating in the Silent Mentor Program, honouring the life and legacy of Mr. Goh—our mentor in death and teacher in silence. Over the course of the programme, I took part in every aspect—from the home visit and preparatory workshops to the final memorial service. Each moment left an indelible mark on my heart, shaping not only the way I learn but also the kind of doctor I aspire to become.
Meeting Mr. Goh’s family was a deeply moving experience. Listening to stories of his life, his values, and his quiet strength reminded me that behind everybody lies a soul—a person who laughed, loved, struggled, and ultimately chose to give their final act to serve future generations of doctors. It humanised the learning process in a way that no textbook ever could. His decision to donate his body was not just an act of generosity; it was a powerful gesture of hope and trust in our hands and hearts.
During the workshops, I was constantly struck by more than just the anatomical knowledge we gained. Each session was imbued with a quiet reverence. Every incision was made not with detachment, but with gratitude. They gave us lessons no simulation could replicate. Through their sacrifice, they taught us the essence of humility, dignity, and service.
It wasn’t just Mr. Goh. All four mentors—each with their own story, their own journey—gave us far more than we could ever return. They reminded me why I chose this path. Medicine, at its core, is not just about diagnosing and treating diseases. It is about honouring life, understanding suffering, and offering comfort with compassion. Even in death, our mentors continued to teach us what it truly means to care.
The Silent Mentor Program has deepened my empathy, reinforced my ethical compass, and reminded me that everybody we study is a vessel of someone’s hopes, dreams, and memories. Our mentors were not just anatomical donors. They were our first real teachers. They were reminders that the most powerful lessons in medicine are not always spoken—they are felt, remembered, and carried forward. To them, I owe more than knowledge. I owe a promise: to honour their gift by becoming a doctor worthy of their sacrifice.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my medical journey so far. Learning from someone who gave their body to science in complete silence was both humbling and powerful. It was a reminder that teaching doesn’t always come through words—sometimes, the most profound lessons are given in quiet selflessness.

The hands-on learning was invaluable, but what left the greatest impact was the emotional connection and gratitude I felt toward my mentor.

I feel immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the Silent Mentor Program. My silent mentor, Tan Hao Enn, or Hao Enn, has left a lasting impact on me—not just through the workshop, but through the journey of getting to know him and his story.
Before the workshop began, we had the chance to meet Hao Enn’s family. Being able to connect with them and hear stories about his life allowed me to understand his values and outlook on life. I am truly grateful to have participated in the Silent Mentor Program. This experience provided a rare and invaluable opportunity to practice clinical skills hands-on and to truly appreciate the intricate anatomy and texture of a real human body. While models and textbooks are important in building our foundation, they can only take us so far—ultimately, we are called to treat real people with real human bodies.
I was deeply moved by the selfless sacrifice of our silent mentors. They were once living individuals, with stories, families, and dreams, and yet they chose to dedicate their final gift to the advancement of medical education. Reflecting on the short but meaningful life of my mentor, the late Tan Hao Enn, who passed away at the tender age of 20, reminded me of the profound fragility and preciousness of life. His silent teaching will forever remain etched in my memory, inspiring me to become a more compassionate and respectful future doctor.

It was an honour to be part of the Silent Mentor Program. From learning about the life stories of our mentors to acquiring surgical and clinical skills, every moment was deeply humbling. What touched me most was the selflessness and love embodied by the silent mentors — strangers who gave us the most precious gift of all, even in death. Our mentors was once a filial son, a loving mother, a passionate educator, and a hardworking provider to his family.
Their quiet generosity moved me deeply and left an imprint on my heart. It made me pause and reflect: What kind of life do I want to live? How can I contribute to my community? How would I want to impact my loved ones?
Through this journey, I came to understand that death is not merely an end, but a point of completion — a final act of giving that continues to spark learning, compassion, and growth in others. I aspire to embody compassion in my career.

The Silent Mentor Program at the Universiti Malaya transformed my understanding of medicine as I learned not only clinical skills like suturing and intubation from Mr. Lim, our silent mentor, but also the deeper values of empathy, respect, and service; meeting his family and hearing about his kind, generous life helped me see him as more than just a donor, inspiring me to honor his legacy through compassionate care and reminding me that every lesson in medicine is intertwined with the human connection and gratitude we owe to those who pave the way for future generations.

Being part of this Silent Mentor Program was a new experience for me. I had the chance to connect with strangers, respect a stranger and his life endeavors and even build friendships with my colleagues which allowed us to work together like a well-oiled machine. Reflecting on this, these are essentially the same experiences a doctor, journeying through their medical life, embarks on. Understanding a patient and their family allows one to carry out a responsibility to treat fellow mankind with the utmost sincerity and compassion. Moreover, teamwork among colleagues is paramount to achieve holistic care for the patient. This program instilled values such as responsibility, dedication, teamwork, respect and commitment which are the hallmark values of a true doctor.

The Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply meaningful experience for me as a medical student. Through Mr. Lim Tim Soi’s selfless donation, I not only gained valuable procedural skills and a deeper understanding of human anatomy but also learned life lessons in compassion, respect, and empathy.
Mr. Lim’s life story is one of resilience and dedication. Despite many challenges, he lived with humility and kindness, always placing others before himself. His decision to become a Silent Mentor was a continuation of his lifelong service to others—a testament to his generosity and love.
During the dissections, we treated his body with the utmost respect, knowing that this was not just a scientific experience but a gift of trust. Mr. Lim’s willingness to share his body has shaped my growth not only as a future doctor but also as a person.
His family’s strength and support of his decision are deeply admirable. I am grateful for their sacrifice and hope they know that Mr. Lim’s legacy will live on through all of us. His words, encouraging us to maintain a pure and joyful heart, will continue to inspire me to approach every patient with empathy and dignity.
Thank you, Mr. Lim, for this invaluable gift. I will always carry your lessons in my heart.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop last week. Throughout the workshop, as well as during its planning stages, I had the chance to observe and learn invaluable lessons.
My groupmates and I developed a meaningful connection with the family of our Silent Mentor, Mr. Lim Tim Soi. Through learning about his life—his journey from birth to his final moments—we gained insight into his role within his family and the way he lived. It became clear how deeply he was loved and cherished by those close to him. This connection inspired us to treat all our mentors with the utmost respect, with the shared goal of becoming better doctors through this experience. Even the daily routine of preparing our Silent Mentor each morning taught us essential lessons in patience and proper patient care.
The workshop itself was incredibly beneficial, teaching us vital skills like suturing, chest tube insertion, and CVL insertion. The trainers were not only knowledgeable but also able to impart their expertise in a structured, time-efficient manner. The hands-on experience, which can't be replicated in textbooks, was essential for our professional development.
During the funeral ceremony, I gained a greater understanding of cultural diversity and developed a deeper respect for different beliefs. Although we never met our Silent Mentor while he was alive, we felt a strong bond with him as his mentees. We shared in the family’s grief and loss, an experience that enriched both my medical journey and my personal growth.
This entire experience has not only made me a better doctor but also a better human being. I hope this program reaches more people and continues to positively impact the community.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been nothing but an unforgettable experience for me. The more I reflect on the things I have done within the past week, the more I realise that I really could not have gained what I did anywhere else. I admit that the medical knowledge and the opportunity to execute multiple procedural skills was a big part of the reason I joined this in the first place, but I did not expect the gift in disguise that came with it until the very last day when it all ended.
It was a gift of lessons. Caring for each of our mentors every morning and night throughout the week was indeed no easy task but I believe it played a pivotal role in connecting us all with our teacher, an individual who put everything else before himself. Meeting the families again at the end of the workshop was also such a heartwarming moment for me. I often wondered at how they could still be expressing gratitude with such big smiles on their faces when it was us who had received so much from their selflessness. I really could not thank them enough.
“Be human first before you become a doctor”. I shall heed these words spoken by one of the mentor’s family members to us all. I believe this experience has truly taught me the meaning of sacrifice, compassion and kindness; humane values one should possess in an aim to serve others, just as a doctor to his/her patients.

The Silent Mentor Workshop has been a deeply humbling and transformative experience. Beyond enhancing my technical knowledge and skills, it has taught me the true essence of empathy, compassion, and respect in the medical field. From home visit, pre-workshop preparation, to workshop and sending off, being involved in every part of the program makes me understand how precious this opportunity is. Our Silent Mentors' selfless sacrifice has reminded me that medicine is not just about science but about humanity. I am truly grateful for this invaluable learning opportunity made possible by the selfless donation of our silent mentor. This experience has deepened my understanding of the human body in ways that no textbook ever could. I sincerely appreciate the dedication of our lecturers in guiding us through this journey with respect and professionalism and the family who are willing to respect the patient's decision which enables us to have the opportunity to learn. This event has not only enriched my medical knowledge but also reinforced the profound responsibility we carry as future doctors. I will always remember what our mentor said: Treat every patient as if they are our family, they can feel the difference. I truly appreciate that I am privileged enough to join this event.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been a deeply humbling and transformative experience, as it has taught me a great deal about humanity, empathy, and gratitude. Learning about Madam Ng Ah Moi’s life through her loved ones’ stories allowed me to see her not just as a donor but as a person who had lived a meaningful life. This experience has helped me appreciate the selflessness of those who choose to give, even in death, so that others may learn and grow.
Most of the Silent Mentors are incredibly generous individuals who believe in giving rather than receiving. Witnessing this made me reflect on my own values and how I can strive to be a better, more compassionate person. Being involved from the home visit to the final farewell ceremony was both eye-opening and deeply emotional. One of the most profound moments was the sending-off ceremony, where we honoured and expressed our gratitude to our Silent Mentor. It reminded me of the fragility of life and how, one day, we may also face the same journey. This realization strengthened my commitment to treating every patient with dignity, kindness, and respect. In conclusion, this program is not just about learning medical skills but about shaping us into doctors who practice with both knowledge and a compassionate heart. I am deeply grateful for this experience, which will stay with me throughout my medical career.

For me, the Silent Mentor Program has been a truly unique experience. It has not only taught me skills and knowledge that cannot be acquired from medical textbooks but also instilled in me the importance of honoring and respecting life in all its forms.
Waking up early every morning for five consecutive days to care for Madam Ng’s body was no simple task, but I have never regretted it. In fact, I am deeply honored to have had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to express my gratitude and respect to these Silent Mentors.
The most valuable lesson I have learned from this program is the importance of empathy and always putting myself in the shoes of the patient. As a medical student, I have clerked many patients, but it is impossible to fully understand each of them. The Silent Mentor Program offered me the precious chance to truly walk through the life of our patient. From the interview with her family, I learned that Madam Ng was a strong, resilient woman, and, at the same time, an optimistic soul who always brought joy to her loved ones. I also learnt about her birthplace, hobbies, personality, and even cherished childhood memories. This experience touched me deeply, as it marked the first time, I truly felt a bond with a patient—reminding me of why I chose to become a doctor: not only to treat medical conditions but to also ensure the well-being of a patient’s mind and spirit.

It has been tremendously enlightening and humbling to be a part of Universiti Malaya's Silent Mentor Program. Along with developing a deeper grasp of human anatomy, specifically the abdomen, forearm, hand, and hernias, it gave me the chance to practise vital medical skills like suturing and the insertion of nasogastric (NG) and endotracheal (ETT) tubes.
Beyond the technical abilities, the opportunity to talk with my mentor's family and learn about her life story was what really made this experience unique. Hearing their stories gave me a deeper appreciation of her selfless contribution and reminded me of the humanity behind medicine.
This program has not only enhanced my medical knowledge but has also shaped my perspective on empathy, respect, and the lifelong impact of those who teach us through their final gift. I will carry these lessons with me in my future practice.

First and foremost, I am honoured to be given the opportunity and to be trusted to be in charged for our Silent Mentor Mdm Ng Ah Moi.
After about 2 weeks of joining Silent Mentor, the act of taking care, cleaning and handling our SM had increased my empathy towards patients. Every incision and suturing made with gratitude for the learning opportunity. I have realised that the sacrifice and contribution made by all the five SM is for the good for our future patients in which to ensure we provide the best care for our future patients - not only treating the disease but care for the psychosocial aspect.
Last but not least, a lot of gratitude for SM Ng Ah Moi and family for this experience as it is a priceless experience that cannot be obtained anywhere else.

We participated in the Silent Mentor Program from the 1st till 16th February, 2025. It started off with the home visit, where we got to listen to entire family members narrate to the lives our mentors led. This built a connection between us and our mentors as we developed empathy and even more care for them.
Week later we proceeded with the thawing of our silent mentors, followed by cleaning and preparing them for the initiation ceremony. The initiation ceremony was the emotional bit of the program as it became very real that the family members were bidding their final goodbyes to their loved ones. The 40th Silent Mentor Workshop consisted of more female mentors than male, meaning the family members had to say goodbye to their wives and mothers that day, which made my heart heavy as I have a close-knit relationship with my mother.
After the initiation ceremony, we participated in the workshops which comprised of chest tube insertion, intubation, interosseous, central venous line insertion and suturing. As medical students, we are rarely served the opportunity to perform these procedures on real life patients as we are still in the early stages of our learning, and we have a long journey to complete. Therefore, experiencing this part of the program was truly an unforgettable one, one that I learned so incredibly from. With every suture, I made mistakes, I learned, and I corrected them.
Then came the anatomy workshop, where we had the opportunity to feel certain parts of the body, especially internal organs. You will not be able to experience this anywhere else apart from the operating theatre.
All in all, I am extremely grateful for this experience being in the silent mentor program. They taught me empathy alongside enhancing my skills in the journey to becoming a great doctor. What separates a good doctor, and a great one is the ability to have a heart and show kindness to all of your patients, which is something I hope to have achieved from the program.

I am deeply grateful to be a participant in the Silent Mentor Workshop. It has taught me so much about the bright side of humanity: the selflessness, the courage, the love. The silent mentors and their families placed immense trust in us, breaking the traditional belief of preserving the deceased body undisturbed, and instead, offering us the invaluable opportunity to learn and grow. I hope to honour their trust by becoming a better person and doctor. May all the silent mentors rest in peace, and may their families live fulfilling lives.

The greatest paradox in life is how those who have the least always give to others the most. And that couldn’t be truer for all 5 of our silent mentors. Learning about their lives humbled me. Though their life was full of toil from day one, they still chose to give at the end of their life, without expecting anything in return except for the hope that their students would give back to the community and become good doctors.
The Silent Mentor Program truly enriched our learning experience in medical school. The hands-on experience to practice our skills were invaluable. My favourite station was learning how to insert chest tube as I was given the opportunity to perform the procedure from start to finish, one which would be immensely helpful to me as a future houseman. Prior to this we could only read about or watch videos about the procedure, however, because of SMP, I was able to feel the rib cages and how to penetrate the pleural cavity successfully. Performing the procedure definitely cannot compare to just reading about it.
I have gained so much insight from participating in SMP, both medical and non-medical related. I hope more students participate in future SMP and can fully benefit from the program and the sacrifice of the silent mentors so that one day we are all able to be better, dignified and empathetic doctors to society. Hopefully, we do not merely treat the body but also tend to the souls of everyone we are privileged to encounter on this short journey on Earth.

The Silent Mentor Program was a deeply enriching experience that has left an indelible mark on my final year in medical school. Through this program, I was provided with hands-on experiences on many life-saving procedures and gained a better understanding of human anatomy. Besides, I did not only gain technical knowledge. From my mentor, I learnt so much, especially from the way she approached life - with compassion, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence These qualities will serve as a constant source of inspiration for me. The importance of empathy, humility, and ethics in medicine was also one of the greatest takeaway from this program. I learnt that treating patients should not be seen as a case on its own but as caring for individuals with their own stories, emotions, and experiences. As the saying goes, "Treat the patient, not the disease." I am grateful and moved by the selfless act of each mentor as well as the recognition and trust that our mentor's family members placed on us. Moving forward, I will carry the knowledge and lessons learnt during Silent Mentor Program throughout my career.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program was truly an eye-opening experience. I did not realise how the program was able to convey the meaning of empathy and kindness when treating a patient. Ever since the visit to my mentor’s home, and hearing about my mentor’s wonderful life story from her blissful family members, I realise the importance in taking care of my mentor’s body during the workshop. From this experience, I have realised a deeper understanding towards our patient of care will reflect to a better care being provided towards them. The Silent Mentor Program not only enable us to practice and sharpen our medical skills, anatomical knowledge, etc., it also engraved core values such as kindness, compassion and self-discipline within us. I am grateful to be able to learn from my mentor. I am also deeply thankful towards my mentor’s family who welcomed us with open arms and selflessly helped to impart the beautiful life story of my mentor to us. Participating in the Silent Mentor Program has been an unforgettable experience for me as a medical student. I had the opportunity to perform hands-on procedures like chest tube insertion, ETT placement, and suturing, which not only helped me improve my skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of these techniques in a real-world setting. However, the experience went far beyond just the technical aspects. On an emotional and spiritual level, it had a profound impact on me. The Mentor’s kindness and her willingness to contribute to our learning journey left a lasting impression. I felt a deep sense of gratitude and respect for her, as well as for her family. They were so supportive and welcoming throughout the program. Their generosity and openness made me realize the true meaning of selflessness and compassion in medicine. The way they embraced us as learners, with such warmth and understanding, reminded me that at the heart of being a good doctor is a commitment to helping others with empathy and care. I am grateful to be part of the Silent Mentor Program and to be given the opportunity to participate in multiple workshops. As a student, I found the hands-on session throughout the workshop to be particularly useful as it has given me an insight as to how better to perform procedures. Procedures such as Chest tube insertion and suturing which were mainly taught on textbook became much easier to understand when carried out practically. Besides that, the program has shaped me to also be disciplined and treat every patient with dignity and respect. As my mentor Madam Loo said to us in writings, "every incision you make into my body will enable you to learn more on how to save the living" Even though my mentor was unable to express pain, we were taught to treat her with respect. In doing so, she offered us invaluable experiences which would help us along our journey as doctors as well as our future patients.
Lastly, the program's home visit has been an amazing platform to learn about my mentor and her family. My mentor has brought my team and her family closer than before even though we had no blood ties. I was able to learn so much from her life and even with her passing, her selfless dedication and contributions towards the society furthered inspired me to be the better version of myself. That is to transcend beyond boundaries and to always help others in need in every way possible.
The program has truly been an amazing experience. I enjoyed the learning process as well as the bond created throughout the session.

The Silent Mentor Program is, in my opinion, one of the best experiences I’ve had in medical school with its numerous benefits, both personal and professional, for participants. This program, which involves learning from donated cadavers (our mentors), provides invaluable hands-on medical training while instilling deep respect for human dignity. Unlike textbooks or mannequins, each donated body is unique, allowing us to study real anatomical variations and the complexities of human structures. These exposure help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in real-life medical scenarios. Although the five years in medical school have taught us a great deal about professionalism and ethics, I believe, this program has pushed the boundaries of empathy, compassion and respect for our beloved mentors and their families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The emphasis on the life’s journey of our mentors truly makes you feel connected to them, to make sure we do right by them although they do not walk amongst us anymore. The Silent Mentor Program is not just an anatomy class—it’s a lesson in gratitude, humility, and responsibility. It transforms students into doctors who see beyond symptoms and diseases, recognizing the person behind every patient. Thank you Madam Loo, Mr Tham, Eugene and Justin. Thank you Silent Mentor Program for giving me another family. I am eternally grateful.

The Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences in my medical school life. It taught me not only about the human body but also about compassion, respect, and the true meaning of selflessness.
I feel deeply grateful to the mentors who, even in passing, chose to teach and guide us. Their generosity allowed us to gain hands-on learning that no book or lecture could ever provide. I also able to meet and build connection with mentor’s family member.
Through this program, I have come to appreciate the human side of medicine, reminding me that behind every patient is a person with a story, a family, and a life lived. I also have a great time spending time with my groupmates. Even though all of us in different posting and have our own busy schedules, but we still manage to make time and learnt together in this event. With a heart full of gratitude, I am forever grateful to our five incredible individuals who, in their final act of kindness, became our greatest teachers. Their selfless gift has given us the privilege to learn in ways no textbook ever could. Through them, we have gained not only medical knowledge but also compassion, humility, and a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a healer.
Every incision we made was guided by their trust. Every observation deepened our appreciation for the art and science of medicine. But beyond anatomy, they have taught us respect and gratitude—reminding us that medicine is not just about knowledge, but about service. Their generosity will forever shape the way we care for our future patients.
Among these incredible individuals, we would like to especially honour our Silent Mentor, Madam Kee. Madam Kee lived by the belief that it is a greater fortune to give than to receive. In life, she dedicated herself to helping others, and in passing, she continued to uphold this value by giving us the priceless opportunity to learn from her.
Because of her generosity, we were able to practice life-saving procedures, preparing us to treat real patients with confidence and competence. Throughout this program, we didn’t just see her selflessness—we felt it. Every moment spent learning from her was a testament to her unwavering spirit of giving.
To Madam Kee and all our Silent Mentors, we thank you. Your final gift will live on in every patient we heal and every life we touch. And to the families, we extend our deepest appreciation—your loved ones have made an immeasurable impact on us, and for that, we are forever grateful. Participating in the Silent Mentor Program was a deeply humbling and transformative experience. Through this program, I had the privilege of learning from Mdm Kee, a selfless individual who donated her body for medical education.
The journey was not just about anatomy but also about respect, gratitude, and human connection. The hands-on workshops allowed me to gain invaluable medical knowledge, while the act of cleaning Mdm Kee’s body and preparing her for the coffining ceremony reinforced the importance of dignity in death. The most emotional moment was listening to heartfelt speeches from her family, which reminded me that behind every Silent Mentor is a life full of love, sacrifice, and memories.
This experience has profoundly shaped my perspective on medicine, emphasizing the need for compassion and respect in patient care. Mdm Kee’s generosity will forever inspire me to be a better doctor and a kinder human being.

The Silent Mentor Program was an intense yet deeply meaningful experience. Our silent mentors showed incredible selflessness by contributing to medical education, giving us the opportunity to practise and develop essential skills. Their families’ generosity was just as profound in supporting this program and honouring the mentors’ final wishes. Beyond gaining medical knowledge, this experience reminded me that compassion should always come first. Handling someone’s loved one until the end of their journey is an honour that reinforced the importance of respect and empathy in medicine. I am truly grateful for this opportunity to refine my hands-on skills and hope to continuously improve so I can provide the best care for my future patients.

I am truly grateful to have participated in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop. I cherished every part of the experience, from the online home visit to the final moments of the closing ceremony. Over the course of just one week, I developed a deep connection with my Silent Mentor and her family, even though we had never met before.
Each morning, we would wake up early to clean our mentors, comb their hair, and prepare them for their final journey—small yet meaningful acts of respect and gratitude. What touched me the most was the coffining session. It was my first time witnessing such a moment, and for an instant, it felt as if I had known Madam Kee for a long time.
This workshop was more than just an opportunity to learn; it was a deeply moving experience that reinforced the values of compassion, humility, and gratitude. Madam Kee’s selfless gift will always stay with me, guiding me in my journey as a future doctor.

I first participated in the Silent Mentor Program, hoping to learn medical skills, but I have received something far more invaluable - lessons about empathy, selflessness and love. From the day we conducted the home visit and built a connection between the student participants and the family members, to the workshops where we learn as much as we could with a heart full of respect and gratitude, to the sending off ceremony, this is truly a week to be forever remembered. During the closing ceremony, the speeches deeply touched me, and I realised the beauty of “turning a loss into a gift", as all our Silent Mentor’s contributions will forever be etched in our medical journey.
I will be eternally grateful to our Silent Mentor, Madam Kee Kim Lan. Her life journey is a story full of love, kindness and wisdom, and her courage and optimism when navigating through life's troubles are truly admirable.
Thank you, Madam Kee, and I will hold dear to your words of advice for all of us.

Participating in the 40th Silent Mentor Workshop was an incredibly humbling and transformative experience. It provided me with a unique opportunity to practice procedural skills and deepen my understanding of human anatomy through hands-on learning, while also fostering empathy and respect for our mentors who selflessly donated their bodies. The journey began with a home visit to the mentors' loved ones, where I was privileged to learn about their life stories, and culminated in the emotional moment of coffining. This experience not only enriched my medical knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for the generosity and sacrifice of those who made such a profound contribution to our education.

We walked into the room as students, eager to learn. But what we received was far more than medical knowledge—it was a lesson on humanity, selflessness, and the weight of trust.
My Silent Mentor lay before me, motionless yet teaching me more than any textbook ever could. Each incision was deliberate, each movement carried the weight of knowing that this was once a living person — someone who laughed, cried, loved, and was loved in return. And yet, in their final act, they chose to give—to let strangers like me learn from them, even in death.
I made mistakes. My hands were not always steady. My sutures were not always perfect. And every time I faltered, my heart was clenched with guilt. I wanted to whisper, I’m sorry. But each time I looked up, my mentor lay there, silent yet forgiving. In that silence, I heard something deeper than words: It’s okay. Try again.
It was at that moment that I understood—this was not just an anatomy lesson. This was a gift of trust, a final act of unconditional generosity. My Silent Mentor did not just donate a body; they donated their final chapter to our hands, believing that we would carry their lesson forward.
As we carefully placed them back, piece by piece, I realized we were not just closing a body, we were closing a story, one that would live on through us. Medicine is not just about knowing where to cut, but about knowing how to heal—with skill, with compassion, with profound respect for the life that came before us.
To my Silent Mentor, Mdm Weng: You are not truly gone. You will live with every patient I touch; in every decision I make as a doctor. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

The Silent Mentor Program was a truly meaningful experience for me. At first, I thought it was just a way to learn clinical skills, but I soon realized it was much more than that. Through this program, I not only gained medical knowledge but also learned the importance of empathy and respect for my mentor.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned was about my mentor’s life. My mentor led a humble yet meaningful life. Learning about her background made me feel a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. It reminded me that every patient I treat in the future is not just a case but a person with a story.
During the program, I also developed a greater appreciation for the selfless contribution of my mentor and their family. Their generosity allowed me to practice and improve my skills without fear of making mistakes. This experience has taught me to always treat my patients with kindness, dignity, and care.
I am truly grateful for this opportunity. It has shaped me not only as a medical student but also as a more compassionate person. Moving forward, I will carry these lessons with me, ensuring that I treat every patient with both skill and heart.

Joining the Silent Mentor Program has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my final year in medical school. Through the home visit, I had the privilege of learning about my mentor’s beautiful life. Initially, I questioned the purpose of this visit, but in the end, I realized that it deepened my appreciation for the Silent Mentor Program even more.
Each morning, we respectfully cleaned the bodies, ensuring they were treated with dignity. Before touching them, we performed proper rituals, reinforcing the respect and gratitude we held for our mentors. The most meaningful part of the program was the opportunity to practice surgical skills under the direct guidance of trained surgeons and doctors. Thanks to our mentors’ selfless sacrifice, I was able to gain invaluable hands-on experience that will shape me into a better doctor. At the end of the program, we bid farewell to our mentors with a proper send-off. Attending the funeral at the memorial park was a first-time experience for me, and it left a profound impact on me. This is truly an experience I will never forget.
Overall, I am deeply grateful for this journey and especially thankful to my mentor, who selflessly donated her body for our learning. I promise to study hard and become a better doctor in honor of her sacrifice.

Participating in the Silent Mentor Workshop was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was also the first time I came so close to understanding the process of death, not just from a medical perspective but on a deeply human level. This workshop is not all about anatomy, procedures and gaining clinical experience. Most importantly, it is about respect for the departed and gratitude for the selfless gift of their bodies. One of the most meaningful aspects of the workshop was the opportunity for us students to go for a home visit, where we could truly understand our mentor’s background and appreciate them as a person who once lived, loved, and had a story of their own. Witnessing the diverse lives and experiences of each mentor gave me a profound appreciation for their generosity and a deeper meaning of life. Though our time with the family members was limited, I still think that there was an invisible bond that connected us together. All in all, the emotions, lessons, and reflections from this experience will definitely stay with us and brought along throughout our medical journey.

I am beyond grateful to have participated in this Silent Mentor Program and honored to have met the silent mentors, who were truly selfless and inspiring. The life stories of Mdm Weng, shared by her daughter, reminded me that the mentors were individuals who had once lived full lives and were deeply loved, yet chose to dedicate their final act to contributing to the medical community. Their generosity and selflessness inspired me to approach this learning experience with the utmost respect and dignity. Throughout the week, I experienced a mix of emotions. I felt curious before the program began, followed by deep sadness during the initiation and send-off ceremonies. At times, I felt guilty, worrying that I had not treated the mentors’ bodies with enough care. During the cleaning and closing process, a profound sense of responsibility weighed on me. All these thoughts and feelings made me realize that every moment in this program carried a deeper meaning beyond just medical learning. It taught me that medicine is not only about knowledge and skills but also about the importance of respect, gratitude, and kindness when treating patients, regardless of their background. Despite the hectic week, the invaluable lessons from this program will shape me into a compassionate and responsible doctor, committed to providing the best care for my patients in the future. Lastly, I sincerely hope that the silent mentors will rest in peace and that their family members will find comfort and pride in the lasting impact their loved ones have made on the community.

Being woken up daily by my 6am alarm clock was a routine I dreaded everyday throughout the program week and it made me question my decision on joining the Silent Mentor Program. However, upon completion of the program and after reflecting, I now see the meaning behind the tedious work and hours that is expected of us students. Madam Weng, my silent mentor who graciously devoted herself to this program continues to teach me about human dignity, compassion, and the importance of treating every patient - living or deceased - with utmost respect. I look back and ponder upon the weekends and after class hours that I previously felt was a huge sacrifice, but in reality, it cannot compare to the sacrifice Madam Weng has contributed.
As I attend each session, I learn to appreciate the life my mentor has lived, and I think about her family who has supported her decision to contribute to medical education even after death. I am also able to realize the practical aspects of what I read and study in textbooks through the workshops which will be invaluable to my future medical practice. This unconventional hands-on experience has strengthened my understanding of anatomical relationships and surgical approaches. Perhaps most importantly, these experiences have reinforced my commitment and will shape my attitude and ethical framework to this career path that I have chosen.
What strikes me most is the deep sense of respect and gratitude that permeates every aspect of the program. I am grateful that I was given this once in a lifetime unique opportunity to learn from my honor mentor and am thankful the organizers behind the program that has managed it so well holistically. Last but not least, this program has made me see death in a different lens and will continue to aspire me to be the best version of myself as a medical student and doctor later.
